Located in the historic heart of Ponta Delgada, this house stands as an exercise in continuity and respect for time. Built before 1951 and integrated into the city's consolidated urban fabric, it comes to us with an identity marked by its scale, its relationship with the backyard, and the memory accumulated through successive ways of living. The intervention starts from an essential principle: to keep what is fundamental. There are no additions of volume or changes to the footprint. The project acts on the existing structure, enhancing its form and spatial organization while carefully adapting them to the demands of contemporary life. The interior is subtly reorganized, improving functionality and comfort without erasing the character of the original house.

The house is situated on a triangular plot with a steep slope along the access street, in the East/West or South/North direction. This has influenced its shape and volume. The construction is positioned at the highest level on the East side, with the house mainly opening to the West. It is distributed over three floors, taking advantage of the slope of the land. Pedestrian and vehicle access are located at different levels through Rua Dr. Domingos da Silva Coelho, utilizing the natural slope of the road and land. The pedestrian access is situated at a higher level on the ground floor, leading to the house entrance through a flap. The car access is located further west at a lower level, leading to a partly covered patio that connects to the garage and service entrance in the basement. The two levels are externally connected through a ramp located to the south or a staircase that connects the ground floor patio, next to the pool, to the basement parking patio.

The Interface de Transportes Lourosa – Fiães is a transport interface, located on a plot of land with around 11,500m2 on the border between these two parishes, comprises a vast parking and manoeuvring area and a support building of around 500m2, which was chosen to be located perpendicular to the road that gives it access. This location allows a better integration into the existing topography, and also clearly separates the access to the car park at east from the buses access at west, so there are no crossroads or possible conflicts between cars and buses traffic.

The project of this house sought to respond to an extensive programme and at the same time, comply with the rules imposed by the allotment. The allotment is located at Praia da Barra, right beside Ria de Aveiro, with privileged views over it. This is a home for the entire family, from grandparents to grandchildren. The house aims to provide living areas where they can be together, and more private and intimate ones.

The site’s slope was decisive for the adopted solution. The existing south/north-oriented slope gave rise to a false basement, where the garage, the lounge, and support areas were located. The upper floor joins these two separate volumes longitudinally, creating a covered parking space and granting a lighter volumetry, like a bridge, which relates to the surrounding garden.

The terrain, with an irregular shape, is located between two streets with a height difference of about four meters. This unevenness along with the presence of a nearby building on the one hand, and the solar orientation and the views on the other hand, were decisive factors for the adopted solution. The building is located near the northern limit, freeing the south space for garden, outdoor sitting and swimming pool.

The house consists of two structures. One comprises only one floor parallel to Av. Das Laranjeiras, and the other consists of 3 floors (basement, ground floor and first floor), which has a slight twist to the first, and lies parallel to the slope of the land, taking advantage of the land platform.

The house is completely covered in white Estremoz marble and its horizontal character is emphasised by concrete slabs which mark out the floors on the sides of the building. The stairs featured on the eastern façade take on an almost sculptural importance.

The house consists of two structures, perpendicular to each other, and a third one serving the swimming pool. Due to its volume this house seems to have two floors, but it is, in fact, distributed almost exclusively in one. The structure of the living rooms, with a double height ceiling, which also houses the study and the gallery located on the first floor, grants it another volume dimension.

The house emerges with two overlapping structures topped by a triangular element (the stairs leading to the terrace). The lower structure, more transparent and more "fragile", supports the higher structure, dimmer and containing more rhythmic openings, where small volumes - the balconies – punctuate to the South.

The arrival at the house is characterised by two exposed concrete walls which surround the building, both hiding and sheltering it. Access is established via a ramp covered by a canopy which extends from the house until the gate, set against an iron pillar.
