Chuck, chuck, chuck… called the landscape of our childhood. And we approached that wild chicken coop. It offered us a roe deer that observed us, a green woodpecker that was blending with the background, and several gardeners that gave us courgettes and onions. And then came the low fog of winter mornings, and the frost. The water flowed through the gutters, and we ate loquats from the tree, fresh and free of charge. And we could not leave. Because we wanted to be part of that landscape, without making noise, with our eyes open and a joyful spirit.

Or I could talk about the Cubist Picasso's inspiration for this break-joint huddle of simple houses, or about the Sacred funicular structure that holds up this composition...

On the slope of a volcano upholstered with low-cost houses, we have an opportunity to reform one of the two unique samples of this peculiar typology: an isolated cottage standing on horizontal rectangular terrain. The project, besides reforming and extending the house, has to solve the relationship of the original plot with the one above it, acquired later by the same owner. The upper part has a garage and better access than the lower one.

An old red Massey Ferguson like Grandpa Joan's still works the land. In this fast-paced world, there are still ancient landscapes where the fumes of the neighbouring houses are important and accompany you in winter; corners of happiness where orchards outside the walls and on the banks of the river are nicely kept. This is the story of a family refuge where one can enjoy nature and simple things; of a time machine that wants to keep this precious landscape forever unchanged.

The need to use that new structure as storage left the inside of the house unbuilt. Our project of rebuilding and completing an unused structure as a new house starts out on this premise.

I remember the first conversation very well: ‘I have a plot in that neighborhood, it's right next to the park. I would like to build a simple, discreet house... And practical, very practical’. Maybe she was talking to me about that idealized practicality? The one that we think will lead us to happiness, and then we realize that what we want is to blow the trumpet or climb a very high summit. I am sorry, but what I was really interested in was that park.

They ask us to extend the house, to live intensely the garden and to dispose of the attainable landscape; Nothing that has not done almost all the neighbours from this cheap houses neighbourhood of the fifties. But in these popular refurbishments, self-construction and simplicity of resources have traditionally outweighed the order, the foresight, or the hand of an architect. We look at the project respecting the values of chance and its diversity of materials and solutions, but also being faithful to rationality; We read the place and propose two extensions and a reform.

We do it bearing in mind the values of the town and its surroundings – landscape, history, culture, identity – that we want to transmit, but also the involvement in the town’s storyline: we understand that a public building is at the same time a public space.
