The design brief for the house came from the client's need for a light-filled house as they previously lived in a dimly lit house. This factor along with their love for form-finished concrete that blends into the context without being overtly loud became the driving force for design.

Situated on a small hillock, the approach to the site begins with a climb towards the west. A winding road leads to the site which is bounded on the east by this access road and neighboring properties around on the 3 sides. The land starts dipping starkly beyond this eastern road thus affording panoramic views from the site towards the city.

The site for the deck house is situated in the plains adjacent to the Tirumala hills in Tirupati. The hills, part of the Seshachalam range spreads from east of the site towards southwest. The site itself is located in a residential layout off the main road lined with sporadic development. The client wanted to combine the house with a social space and an office for his business needs. The 15000 sft plot also was to accommodate a multipurpose play-court, a ‘Zen’ garden and flowing water keeping in tune with the client’s lifestyle.

The site is a 10000 sqft plot laden with trees within a gated community. These kind of developments along the edge of the city offer low rise and tree laden surroundings as coveted luxury lifestyle venues. The plot is bound by roads on the eastern and southern edges. The longer edge of the site is along the eastern direction. The idea for this four bedroom house is about the negotiating the trees and using these conditions to bring about a sense of place. The central space of the site is occupied by a jacaranda, mango, chikoo and some teak trees.

The site for the house is located on the fringe of a fast developing area of Bangalore, which has a rocky hillock as the backdrop. Located on a T junction in a gated community the site steps up away from the road towards west in three levels. These three levels became the basis for establishing the house and its connection to the ground. A house is often a complex assemblage of disparate functions and desires; Collective vs individual, public vs private, formal vs informal, immediacy vs slowness, largeness vs intimate. The house for a soon to be retired doctor sought to embrace this complexity. Programmatically, three bars were conceived to hold public, semi-public and private spaces arranged around a large courtyard. Circulation spine meanders around the courtyard offering connect to the outside.

Located in dense urban neighbourhood of Wilson garden, Bangalore the site came as a surprise to us as it was flanked in the west by more than half an acre of wooded garden of the neighbours. The dense plantation of trees in that garden gives one the feeling of being in the suburb or near a forest. The 6000 square feet site for the house was earlier a part of this neighbours land and is marked by the presence of mature trees. Being in the site gave us the feeling of being enveloped and sheltered by the trees. What catches your attention is the play of light through branches and leaves, which is quite dramatic. The other aspect was that the large part of the site was made up of loose, but large rocks. The design was driven by this character of the site where the idea was about a porous structure that absorbed and internalized this innate quality of the place.

The surrounding rural landscape here is giving way to,enigmatic developments and placeless structures inspired by urban imagery. The process was to look at these conditions and evolve a form that maintains a sense of continuum with the idea of place without resorting to mimicking the old. The brief described a three bed room house which can accommodate 2 families and a social lifestyle.
