A Dialogue Between Concrete and Nature
Site Selection: Architectural Intuition The story of the project began with a pivotal moment of professional insight. The client had already purchased two plots in a forested area, but after evaluating the surrounding territory, the architectural team suggested a change. The reason was a breathtaking landscape nearby, dominated by ancient, towering pines. A strong intuition—which proved to be exactly right—suggested that these pines should become the central axis of the house, rather than just a backdrop.

The building, located in the picturesque central part of Kaunas, is an important industrial site – it housed one of the largest and most significant printing presses in Lithuania, "Spindulys," which operated from 1928 to 2009. Although the printing house, built according to a typical interwar industrial building design, was not considered an architecturally valuable structure, it was much more than just an industrial object. It is a culturally, economically, and historically significant part of Kaunas city – this is where particularly important publications of the time were printed, and even the Lithuanian Republic's coins were minted here (including the 1925, 1936, and 1938 series).

The non-standard L-shaped plot, which is accessed by a cobbled street, is located in the center of the capital of Lithuania, the largest city in Lithuania, However, this place exudes the atmosphere of a small town. The transition from the city center to authentic wooden single-story houses with balconies and carved wooden finishes in just a few minutes by car is peculiar and fascinating. It feels like you are in the old town of a small town.

The plot is located on the slope of the Nemunas Valley river. Historically, it once happened that the Nemunas River was dammed, so the valley below remained, and the Kaunas Lagoon was formed nearby. The place is interesting cause on the other side, on the opposite bank of the valley there is a baroque complex of Pažaislis Monastery, which cannot be seen directly through the overgrown trees during the summer, but when the leaves fall, it is that tete-a-tete glimpse. Sometimes the places have a historical context, sometimes a natural one, and here, in addition to everything else, the place also have a very interesting certain moral, not real context, because it is only from stories, it is supposed, we can only say that there is a connection between this place and Pažaislis Monastery.

Kindergarten "Vaikystes Sodas" is a part of the transformation of a complex revived abandoned barracks town into a multifunctional residential quarter, which consists of 7 residential buildings, 2 commercial buildings, a school, and a kindergarten. In the contemporary architecture competition „Zvilgsnis I save“ it was chosen as the best architectural object in Lithuania, created in 2018, and in the competition organized by the Lithuanian Real Estate Development Association in 2021, this barracks complex was selected as the best real estate project. The team of architects gradually turned the military fortress into a residential quarter, enabling historic buildings to vibrate in a modern way, telling the story of the past and creating a new one for future generations.

The team of architects was entrusted with the implementation of the conversion of the territory of the immovable cultural values - the historical barracks in the Žemieji Šančiai district, to develop a creative placemaking, bringing vibrancy to an old military district. Built in a historic environment, Queen Martha's School building became a part of the transformation of an abandoned barracks into a multifunctional residential area consisting of 7 residential, 2 commercial buildings, a school, and a kindergarten.

Monumental expression, a two-story building with a basement is located in the picturesque central part of Kaunas, in the old interwar villa district. The composition of the new house keeps the spirit of Kaunas modernism alive as the circular windows designed in the concrete planes give the building the impression of modernism. The two-volume reinforced concrete residential house is embedded in a rather expressive descending relief, due to which the building itself only further highlights the slope of the plot.

Lithuania House of Basketball is an exceptionally designed Basketball Museum building, located in an exclusive location between the urbanistic old town, near the historic Kaunas Castle and natural Santaka Park, at the confluence of the largest Lithuanian rivers. The laconic building is the last building of Kaunas Old Town urban fabric, which seems to complete the quarter - a passer-by is already entering Santaka Park here.
