The house was built in the early decades of the 19th century, when the myth of Sintra was also being born with the flourishing of various noble and upper-bourgeois houses along the recently populated slopes of woodlands and walled pathways. It was a transformation that made Sintra the capital of Romanticism.

There is a clear difference between the two moments of the house: the pre-existing object renewal and the contemporary intervention. The idea is allied with the recovery of the most significant elements of the semi-detached condition: the main façade and the mansard roof shape.

Built almost two centuries ago, the Cais da Rocha do Conde de Óbidos is at the center of this riverbank docks which, fortunately, continues to be in permanent activity and transformation. The project consists of the rehabilitation of two old logistic warehouses with very different characteristics. The first one is built in solid brick walls suspending a roof made up of 4 metallic trusses. Inside there is also an iron mezzanine with a wood floor to be refurbished. The second is an ample space with a double-height with a wide vaulted ceiling, built in a structure composed of 6 metallic arches of hyperbolar geometry. The space is divided into a set of 5/6 offices, served by a community cafeteria, meeting room, pantry, and sanitary facilities. The idea is to combine the two very different volumes into a balanced set.

The demolition of the pre-existing warehouse and the construction of this new building on a backed plan allows uncovering a section of the Águas Livres Aqueduct, called Galeria da Esperança. This initiative reveals the urgent safeguard that this monument lacks in its parallel route to the São Bento Street since it’s sunk in the hillside under a number of buildings.

The house subtly emerges in the landscape. Its volumetry gradually gains presence as the ramp path descends from the street. This intention is clear when crossing the three moments of the house: the progressive arrival, the ambiguity of the interior/exterior living space, and the outdoor social area on the meadow side. The pergola movement translates this transition.

The house belongs to a band of housing built 60 years ago that is nowadays a very quiet neighbourhood of Lisbon. It was a renewal and an extension of the existing area by the alignment of the rear facade with the facades of the two neighbouring dwellings. The renewal was complete and included also the demolition of the pre-existing building, retaining only the the main facade.
