The Mill of Betekom / ALT architectuur

This is an intervention in and restoration of the early 16th-century mill ruins of Betekom. The ruin has been stabilized through a whole series of injections and reinforcements in the stone mass. The ruin is constructed of iron sandstone. This is a local stone that is very expressive in its eroded form.

This covered space for a youth movement is located in a newly laid-out green area. The covered space has no front or back. It is an octagon that has landed as an object in the open public space. It can be fully opened and closed by a series of identical wooden doors. In this way, we respond to great flexibility and varying use.

The new volume creates a spatial tension with the old steel structure, the sloping roof planes, and the rough materiality. The architectural intervention itself can be read as one large piece of furniture that organises the entire programme. This creates a sculptural volume that you walk in and out of, cook in, put things in and take things out of, look through in both directions,... The piece of furniture faces the panorama of the harbour.

The decision by the city of Ghent to establish its department of culture in an old warehouse on the river Leie was intended as a bold statement. By situating it at this particular site, a new axis is created, that runs perpendicular to the main commercial axis in the city centre. In order to ensure that the architecture communicates directly with the city, an explicit language of forms was used. The new bay windows on the roof level facing different directions, and the transparency of the ground floor layout are intended to stimulate this communication. It was our explicit choice to open the courtyard to the public and reshape it into a place for people to take a break and rest. Inside the building, a box office was set up on the ground floor. The first and second floors accommodate offices and the third floor is a multifunctional space. What remained of the old warehouse has been restored and put in contrast with the new office interiors and library.
