The design of the Lake Elmo weeHouse is a hyper-efficient home for clients who live in both Australia and Minnesota. The home was bound between several constraints: a modest budget, the flood plain below, and a 16’ maximum zoning height above. Nonetheless, the 990 sf box contains 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, and ample open space.

The Cumberland weeHouse is a year-round lakeside retreat for a family of four and their guests. The sloped, wooded lot provides a foil for the weeHouse’s elegant, horizontal form, its strong, overhanging roof, and the accompanying lakeside walkway. The basement level walk-out leads directly to the lake and includes two bedrooms, a bathroom, and a flex living/sleeping space with a cozy, wood-lined sleeping alcove.

Renovation of this 22’ x 64’ long farmhouse involved saving the skeleton—a 19th century timber-framed barn—which revealed two smaller stick-framed structures. The original structure was maintained and exposed by strategic demolition followed by adding a highly insulated 12” SIP shell outside the original timber + log structure, echoing the BarnHouse vernacular of an iconic shell holding individual spaces, some lofted.

The Sonoma weeHouse is a small, ultra-minimal home—based on Alchemy’s original weeHouse®—customized to meet specific style and finishing requirements of the client, Apple’s Director of Store Design, and an architect himself. It is composed of two minimalist open-sided boxes set on concrete plinths nestled on the edge of gnarled oaks.
