Terrace House / Aidlin Darling Design

This dramatic remodel of a non-descript 1950s hillside residence converts a two-story structure into a three-story home for a growing family. The home boasts contrasting but remarkable views of the city of San Francisco to the east and Sutro Tower to the west. The front and rear facades employ 20-foot-tall, 30-inch-deep steel brise soleils to deflect light and simultaneously frame cherished views while editing out less desirable ones. The southern and northern anchor walls are skinned with hand-troweled plaster and create visual and mental privacy from the adjoining neighboring homes. In between these walls reside crystalline glass-and-steel exterior structures that provide the family with remarkable eastern views of downtown San Francisco and beautiful sunset views through a canopy of backyard trees. A living roof provides ample insulation and rainwater purification as well as an inviting natural respite within the confines of an urban setting.

Channeling the spirit of this mid-century modern home’s original designer, Joseph Esherick, daylight was a primary objective for this comprehensive contemporary transformation. Situated amongst much larger homes in the Pacific Heights district of San Francisco, this project adapts the original design to its present-day context. Central to the new design is a large multi-story interior garden atrium that is intended to capture outdoor space within the home.

High Desert Retreat / Aidlin Darling Design

Sited on a rocky desert plateau outside of Palm Desert, this single-family residence is tightly nestled within a constellation of boulders, overlooking the Coachella Valley and the San Jacinto Mountain Range beyond. The materials of the home were chosen to quietly contrast the lighter palette of the desert landscape. The blackened wood siding is pine wood that is acetylated, burnt, wire-brushed, stained, and sealed. All of these treatments are intended to provide a highly textured finish that is bug and rot-resistant, and minimizes movement within a climate known for its large diurnal temperature swings.

The intention of this residence was to create a sanctuary for a writer, his wife, and two college-age sons. The site is located in a typical suburban community in Mill Valley, California. The request from the client was a home with an extremely quiet street presence that, once entered, creates a garden-like oasis. In addition, as collectors of modern art, the clients wanted to merge the spirit of an urban industrial artist's studio with the comfort of a rural home.

The jury noted that the real strength of the project is in its simplicity and its restraint; “The crisp detailing and carefully composed materials make this just a stunning project through and through.”
