An adaptive renewal project at the urban-rural junction — The Tangshan Ancient Ape-man Cave Scenic Area, nestled in a valley to the east of Nanjing city, is celebrated for the discovery of ancient ape-man relics and has long been a renowned tourist attraction on the outskirts of Nanjing. Situated at the rural-urban fringe, this area has historically served as a vital transportation corridor, with an east-west road traversing the valley. The close proximity and confined space between the mountain and the road, along with the existence of a drainage ditch, have led to mutual constraints in land use for the scenic area, parking facilities, and community public spaces. Consequently, the Tangshan Ancient Ape-man Cave Scenic Area has been persistently troubled by issues such as traffic congestion, a lack of distinctive features, and insufficient service amenities.

Village Activity Center
Table tennis room, chess room, drama room, newspaper room, library room, children's room... These are the names of rooms that have been frequently seen in the village activity center recently.Village activity centers are public service facilities set up in villages to enrich and enhance the cultural and recreational lives of villagers. This approach of referring to the centralized setting of spaces and venues in urban communities is usually based on village collective assets, sometimes a compound, sometimes an office building. Although it may not be attractive in appearance, it can often be used to allocate the functional uses of rooms according to external environmental requirements and village collective needs, making it quite practical.

Urban Regeneration by the Canal - Taixing, situated in the south-central region of Jiangsu Province, stands as the convergence of Huai and Wu cultures. Established in the first year of Shengyuan during the Southern Tang Dynasty, it is a millennium-old city with a rich history. Historically, Taixing County was characterized by an intricate network of waterways, thriving alongside and in harmony with the water, and its fortified walls were constructed in the shape of a turtle's shell. Encircling the city were two moats, both inside and outside the walls, with several winding watercourses resembling snakes in between, forming a pattern reminiscent of the Black Tortoise and White Snake, commonly known as the " City laid out in the shape of a turtle and snake." In recent times, with the city's growth, a new urban layout gradually emerged to the north and east of the old city, intersected by the Rutai Canal and Qiangxi River. Notably, the Rutai Canal, linking the Yangtze River in the west and the Yellow Sea in the east, has served as a pivotal regional waterway spanning Rugao and Taixing since ancient times.

Project Background. "Building a bigger restroom in this area."-This is the initial request I received when I was brought to this site by the first party in 2017. Nanjing Tangshan Ancient Ape Cave Scenic Area is famous for the discovery of ancient ape ruins and has always been a famous tourist attraction in the suburbs of Nanjing. There is a flood channel that runs east and west on the theorem slope of the mountain range because of the topography of the mountain range, which is the source section of the Tangshui River, the mother river of Tangshan. The project is located at the bottom of the northern slope of the mountain, the only narrow area left between the floodway and the city road. Limited by the cramped land use, the scenic area has been plagued by outdated service facilities issues. This project aims to move the humble ticket office and management office next to the original parking area of the scenic area to a larger site, and build a public restroom in the scenic area.

In 2019, ATA design team received the task of designing a toll station for Tangshan Interchange of Shanghai-Chengdu Expressway. As the most important transportation hub in the east of Nanjing, the owner hopes to show the image of Tangshan as the "East Gateway of Nanjing" through the shed of Tangshan Interchange, and it is also an important node for the peripheral transportation organization of the 2021 Jiangsu Garden Expo Park.

Project Background. Lixiang Village is a village about 60 kilometers away from Nanjing city. It is a plain village near the mountain. The canals and ponds in Lixiang were formed by the rivers in the nearby mountains flowing through rice fields and villages. In recent years, Li Xiang has attracted many tourists for sightseeing because of the blueberry planting industry and characteristic historical culture. However, the original public facilities in the village could not meet the increasing demand for tourist services. Hence, in 2016, the ATA design team renovated some of the abandoned houses in the village to create a new village alley that runs through the interior of the village and integrates the function of tourist services, catering, historical exhibitions, cultural and creative exhibitions, and sales. This new village alley is not closed but integrated with the houses. The business opportunities of the tourists in the village have attracted many aboriginal villagers to return to their hometowns to operate hotels and homestays and sell agricultural products.
