Adam Knibb Architects were approached to design a contemporary house extension in Warsash. The clients were keen to cater for a very active lifestyle based near the waterfront and looked for an inventive solution to suit their needs; opening up the interiors and bringing the family together in the process. An open plan arrangement contains a new kitchen, along with an integrated breakfast bar, as well as a casual seating area that all benefit from long views out towards the garden. The ground floor of the extension remains well lit through a high provision of glazing: a large set of sliding doors along with carefully arranged rooflights. One roof light is formed by a window wrapping up and over the breakfast bar, creating a seamless link between indoor and outdoor spaces. The new proposal's footprint does not extend beyond that of the existing conservatory in order to remain sympathetic in scale to the main dwelling.

The client’s aim was to create a contemporary extension to a historic family home, offering flexible spaces, whilst ensuring the addition fit sympathetically within its context. As privacy and security is important within a family home, the design will create a balanced relationship between large open living areas and private spaces. With both a south/ east facing garden it was important to maximise the natural light into the new spaces to negate any dark zones. The proposal, although contemporary in form, will blend in harmoniously with the surrounding and respect the Old Vicarage’s character.

Adam Knibb Architects were approached to put together a contemporary extension for a Grade II Listed barn in Alresford, Hampshire. Hurdle House has a long history within the village, having been part of the original sheep fairs back in 1792. The clients had sought an architect who could provide a contemporary addition to the house but still maintain respect for the original barn.

The brief was to replace an existing garage with a pair of semi-detached contemporary timber & zinc clad houses in Winchester, Hampshire which would accommodate 2 bedrooms, bathroom and living accommodation. The proposal provides parking whilst making use of the south facing aspect for amenity spaces. The design, described ‘as contemporary timber pods on top of a dark monolithic base’, takes it initial form from local urban houses, is a simple rectangle with a pitched roof. The building has allowance for parking underneath. The structure, which only shows it narrow façade to the road is clad in contemporary style with vertical timber and zinc roof.
