The design of the new headquarters of BNL is part of a particular and unique context. Unique because the nature of the context is a layering of infrastructures that are separated by two important urban areas of the city of Rome, thanks to the construction of the station for high-speed rail, which leads to a new role, not only in terms of services service but also as “urban place”. Particular because the area where the new building will stand, due to its geometric shape and topography and its relative orientation, suggests to design the building according to the principle of “Janus”. We consider it important that the new building develops a dialogue with the adjacent complex of Tiburtina railway station, with its main features characterized by size and horizontality. The dialogue does not necessarily have to be direct, but should have references both to perspectives and to the different levels of the station, and also a different role (the horizontal stratification) in the new urban landscape.

The Marseilles Docks as a place of reflexion and meeting between territory and city, past and future, users and inhabitants of the place. The Marseilles Docks as a place of architecture which is an answer to a specific context: an intervention on sensitivity and place specificity, Marseilles in relation to the Docks, the city and the sea. An intervention on the Docks ground level to create an opened system connected to penetration, transparencies and new relations extending to the sea. An intervention on people flow to give different intensities to the place.

The three buildings that divide the building space are meant for distinct but complementary functions. A tower, above all, to report a strong presence and a authentic willingness. In the tower centered on a spiral staircase-space are located the archives, the areas of consultation and the digital library: the memory of the initiatives and activities of IULM in the field of fashion, film, communication and the place of training and study. The real communicative heart of knowledge of IULM.
