The new dementia village in Oslo, Norway – ‘Furuset Hageby’ – is designed to answer the future demands of age-related care and living by creating continuity in life and avoiding the experience of being in an institution. With recreational gardens, open everyday functions such as a hairdresser, restaurant, culture house, grocery shops, and dementia-friendly design the future residents will live in a familiar and homely village environment, and the caregivers are given an attractive workplace. With an increasingly large group of elders who are affected by dementia, there is a need to innovate and rethink our healthcare services and facilities.

Straumehagen is the latest addition to the centre of the new urban development of Straume, an island outside Bergen. 3RW arkitekter have designed the building to allow each apartment unit to look onto a communal courtyard with views towards the surrounding mountains and sea. Perforated metal sheets adorn the north facade to provide protection from strong winds and ornament to the outdoor corridors leading into each residential unit. The building meets the ground with a one-storey timber envelope for commercial and office spaces.

When a big tree in the forest dies, an organic process that creates what we know as a clearing begins - open room in the otherwise dense forest. We want to develop the memorial on Utøya as such a clearing; forming a clear spot and highlight all the beautiful landscape qualities that are already in place and in contact with the surrounding environment. Our goal is to shape the open space between the big pine trees as a major unifying circle. The circle is set in the landscape with a slightly lower slope than the current terrain, but still allowing the sloping down towards the water and preserves an amphitheater / bowl shape. When the path from the central building areas at Utøya comes in to the memorial, we lower the terrain gently along the circle, thus creating a seating edge where you approach the circle.
