Dog Villa on Awaji Island: "What Changes and What Remains" – On the northern part of Awaji Island, this project is a sea-facing rental villa designed for dog owners. In recent years, the northern part of Awaji has been experiencing a rapid urbanization process, transforming the landscape drastically by adding new cafés and theme park developments along the seaside. Facing such an uncertain and indeterminate context, we wanted to confront these rapid changes with "ambiguity and ambivalence," rather than rejecting them unilaterally or accepting them uncritically.

This refurbishment project of an old traditional house is situated in the village of Chihaya Akasaka in Osaka Prefecture. The small village has been portrayed in the Taiheiki, a famous 14th-century Japanese historical epic, and is well-known for its rugged topography and breathtaking terraced rice fields. The clients, a young couple with a baby, wanted to get closer to nature and approach a simpler way of life while offering their child a better living environment to grow up in.

Situated on the outskirts of Ueda in Nagano prefecture, this traditional wooden house was bought by the clients as a weekend house as well as a future retirement house. At first, the existing building was of no interest as the clients wanted to dismantle it and build a new house on the plot. However, after a first site visit, we began questioning this strategy as we discovered an interesting dwelling that was displaying a well-made traditional craftsmanship.

Warehouses : creation and transformation - The plot is situated in the garden city of Miyamae in the city of Kawasaki, Kanagawa Prefecture. Here, the existing buildings traditional family house and an agricultural warehouse_ are bordering vegetable gardens and agricultural lands, giving a rare impression of an untouched postwar bubble within the ever-developing urban fabric of the greater Tokyo Metropolitan Area. This nostalgic atmosphere and feel is the beginning point as well as the underlying idea of our project.
