As a microcosm of the intense residential development that is commonly occurring in county units, this school in Xinyang Huangchuan County, Henan Province, is surrounded by high-rise residential neighborhoods on an extremely compact site. Walking into it, one feels as if one has returned to the high-rise buildings of the big city, oblivious to the vast fields that lie just a kilometer or two away.

Pugong Mountain is located in Xinyang, Henan Province. According to legend, during the Tang Dynasty, Pupu Taoist people lived in seclusion on this mountain, collected medicines and made alchemy, and hung pots to save the world. Their virtues were admired by all people, so they were called Pugong Mountain. Documents record that in the past, the ancient trees and vines and pine wings of Pushan were empty, and when looking at the vast expanse of the sky in the distance, there were purple hazes in the mist;

The Nanwanggang village, under the governance of Xinyang city, has abolished its administrative establishment since the township merging and adjustment many years ago. The entire base consists of two parts - the former courtyard of the township government has fallen into disuse while its adjacent grain reserve depot has been out of service for years. How to re-energize these two neighboring and unoccupied collective assets have thus become the biggest challenge in our design.

On one hand, the village is rich in natural and cultural landscapes: mountains, ancient dwellings from Qin Dynasty, ancestral temples,old trees, rivers, paddy fields, and bamboo forests…etc. On the other hand, the village suffers from poor accessibility, poor economy, lack of vitality, and a growing tendency of more empty-nesters. Most of the people still living here are left-behind elders, children, and handicapped villagers.

As Chinese communities, such as Xinyang, begin to expand at rapid paces, the existing infrastructures must be re-thought and re-organized, as the demand for new development adds stress to the current systems. Working with a site measuring over 36 kilometers in length with varying topography – a mountainous region in the south to plains and plateaus to the north – the firms resorted to a solution “requiring calculated sensitivity and ingenuity” based on the region’s natural systems.
