As part of the Samsung (China) Semiconductor Corporate Social Responsibility program, Yuan Architecture Studio has completed a series of three rural school libraries since 2020 at the foothills of the Qinling Mountains. The first, "Zhongnan Book Pavilion" (2021), revitalized its campus environment; the second, "Qin Feng Book Pavilion" (2023), created a shared space bridging school and village life. Through these projects, we recognized that rural construction requires a clear distinction between architect-controlled elements and open-ended components—inviting teachers and students to co-shape their environment. This approach aligns closely with N. John Habraken's concept of "Open Building."

We were commissioned to renew a courtyard in the village of Caijiapo, in the Huyi District of Xi'an. This project is situated north of the Qinling Mountains, where, in 2018, teachers and students from the Experimental Art Department of the Xi'an Academy of Fine Arts, led by Mr. Wu Xiaochuan, founded the Guanzhong Art Cooperative. This initiative also led to the Guanzhong Mangba Art Festival, which has since launched a series of art and rural construction projects.

Background. Since 2020, FARchitect has participated in the Tianyuhe Village landscape beautification project as the design party, and established close connections and trust with the village collective and villagers in design and on-site services. At the beginning of 2021, encouraged by the national rural revitalization policy, Tianyuhe Village collective decided to introduce "New Village Craftsman Residents" and turn four idle rural homesteads into "Craftsman's House" homestays with the theme of craftsmen's studios, as a model project for the village collective to explore new models of rural revitalization. The four "Craftsmen's Houses" include the rural restaurant of the Chef's New Village Resident's Studio, the rural traditional Chinese culture museum of the Calligrapher's and Painter's New Village Resident's Studio, the rural design center of the Architect's New Village Resident's Studio, and the rural homestay college of the homestay operator's New Village Resident's Studio. However, FARchitect had been deeply influenced by this new model of rural revitalization and accepted the invitation as New Village Resident Architect, becoming the masters of the rural design center.

In Xi'an, a city rich in historical context, Qiaodao Studio has uniquely blended traditional aesthetic spirit with modern design principles to meticulously craft a four-story office space for a consulting firm. This space not only reflects the ancient city's elegance but also embodies modern innovative flair. The design's core inspiration comes from a deep understanding of human inner activities, cleverly transforming the basement into a realm immersed in the subconscious, symbolizing infinite creative potential. The upper floors represent the clear stream of rational thought, extending the boundaries of thinking through logical and rational design language.

Heatherwick Studio has revealed the design of a new shopping district in the historic city of Xi’an in Shaanxi, China. The proposal aims to highlight the city’s rich heritage of ceramic-making and, through this, to create a sensory experience for visitors in opposition to the restricted act of online shopping. Spanning over 1115,000 square meters, the development features a mixture of functions, from offices, apartments, and a hotel, to a variety of green spaces, rooftop terraces, gardens, and a sunken terrace, all doubling as social spaces. The project is under construction and scheduled for completion in 2024.

The Qujiang Museum of Fine Arts is located at the beginning section of Xi’an’s Datang Everbright City, south of the famed Giant Wild Goose Pagoda. The client asked for a new architectural icon at the East Entry of the museum. In response to the brief, Neri&Hu’s proposal takes the idea of a monolithic urban monument as the guiding concept to not only satisfy the museum’s newly expanded cultural and commercial functions but to also serve as an anchor and a durable symbol of social history for the surrounding urban fabric. Since the vicinity of the site is occupied by existing galleries, the design intervention minimizes the impact of the new building through careful consideration of the architectural massing and detailing.

The Xi'an Shiyou University residential campus boiler station was planned in 1994 and finally completed in 1997. However, due to changes in the urban heating system, it was closed in 2014. When we visited it in 2019, despite being relatively new, the boiler station presented an intriguing image of a historical ruin, surrounded by urban residential buildings. This type of coal-burning boiler station was once common in North China. However, with the shift to a different energy supply system, this type of facility will no longer be built. The tall chimneys and large coal scuttles that were designed with instrumental rationality have become obsolete with the end of production. However, these useless structures, which were not regulated by present zoning laws, remind us of the simplicity and straightforwardness of that rapidly developing decade. This type of boiler station has become a historical symbol of those golden years, even though most are still under 30 years old.
