A mixed-use redevelopment on former railway lands, Pumphouse demonstrates how heritage, site, and budget challenges can inspire innovation, sparking new ideas about attainable housing design and city-building. Originally constructed in 1906 to improve the city's water supply system, the James Avenue Pumping Station closed in 1986 and was slated for demolition. After 17 failed attempts to revive the building within Winnipeg's Exchange District National Historic Site, 5468796 Architecture convinced an existing client to connect with the City-as-owner to take on an unsolicited conceptual design proposal and financial pro-forma, leading to the building's successful preservation – and new life. The project approaches the existing Pumping Station as a "found object", integrating an office and restaurant within while flanking the heritage building with two residential blocks that push the potentials of multi-family housing.

In a prairie-value, conservative-minded early 20th-century Winnipeg suburb composed primarily of large-scale, traditional-style dwellings, our clients sought a home in which to age in place and enjoy a high degree of both airiness and privacy. Veil House is arranged on a loose nine-square grid organized around a central courtyard. The residence is configured as a series of free-flowing open living spaces, (living, family, dining, kitchen, circulation) framed by solid utility blocks, (washroom, laundry, fireplace, storage, appliances). This interplay eliminates the need for walls and doors. The unique configuration allows all living spaces to be spatially defined while also visually and acoustically connected. Double height spaces – sloped ceilings (kitchen + family room), infinite ceiling (dining room), double volume (living room), and open volume (courtyard) blur the grid in sections and create a private primary bedroom on the upper floor.

The Forks Market Food Hall breathes new life in to one of Winnipeg’s most important and beloved public spaces. The market acts as the city’s living room, a place for people to gather and relax with their friends and loved ones. The design aims to re-define the aging interior as a modern food hall and event space.

This project began as a renovation to Tache Hall, a 1911 student residence, for Music and Art at the University of Manitoba. When an opportunity arose for federal stimulus funding during the 2009 recession, the decision was made to develop a portion of the program separately, so it could be designed and constructed in an expedited manner to meet funding deadlines. This project, the ARTlab, became the first of a multi-phase creative arts facility.
