Site - This project is in Sandy Cove, a small West Vancouver neighborhood in a mature coastal rainforest filled with mature Douglas fir and Western red cedar trees. The unique site has three "front" yards, facing Cypress Mountain to the north, Burrard Inlet to the south, and Lighthouse Park to the west. The site's complex geography is cradled by rough, lichen-covered granite. This house replaces a distinctive Ron Thom-designed house that was as sharp and ragged as the site with an innovative hexagonal grid inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright's Usonian floor plans. Unfortunately, the previous house from the 1960s was demolished after a contentious battle between heritage preservationists, local politicians, and land speculators.

The long and narrow cross-pitched site is asymmetrical with a pan-handle shape. Views to English Bay, the Vancouver skyline, and the Stanley Park peninsula are spread across the horizon to the south and south-east. Neighborhood development in this area is regulated by specific design guidelines that encourage roof forms rather than strong volumetric expression.

The site’s generous width with its semi-naturalized condition presented an opportunity for landscape elements to organize the sequence of the house in the form of four distinct courtyards. Clad in locally-milled yellow cedar, four massive beams frame these spaces:

Nestled among boulders and rock outcrops, perched on the precipice of a deep, forested ravine in West Vancouver, Canada, House 4249 builds on the legacy of a West Coast Modernist style inspired by the works of Neutra, Ellwood, Koening and Erickson, with origins in West Vancouver beginning in the 1940s and continuing into the 1970s. Like many designs of these predecessors, House 4249 captures the spirit of openness and a connection with nature – both hallmarks of the Modernist movement in residential design at that time. Both the intrinsic differences and the links between the built environment and nature are simultaneously celebrated. By strategically merging interior and exterior, both visually and physically, the boundaries between the built and the natural are dissolved, and living spaces, while distinct in character, become directly connected to, and are one with, nature.

The design for the West Vancouver Community Centre involved a set of ambitious design goals. The client wished to consolidate a number of disparate facilities, to provide a front door to their recreation campus, and to take an aggressive approach to social health and environmental innovation. The project’s technical and administrative challenges came to define the Centre’s role in West Vancouver’s distinctly West Coast social fabric. This is a culture that enjoys a strong tradition of both civic activity and physical wellness. The preeminent architectural elements in the project, the three-storey atrium and the circulation spine, reflect these traditions.
