By engaging all senses to define the experience and stories of space, a unique project was being established. The urban solution approach, for the public square and contemporary designed modular kiosks in the Baroque historic city in Varaždin, ought to emphasize and preserve the identity on-site, and at the same time promote sustainability and local craftsman production. The project aims to highlight a new design, for an existing public square in the historical fabric of the city; while formating a functional and inspiring gathering point for tourists and strengthening the educational character. Over the years, this area has undergone a transformation and has become an important craftsman location. In order to emphasize its purpose and attractiveness, the newly designed solution offers a sensitive approach that would nurture and preserve the current spatial identity. And, still offering new possibilities, better presentation space for the local craftsmen, and public space that is flexible and adaptive to various occasions and events.

The aim for the design of the Varaždin University Student’s Restaurant and Home was to connect the new building with the old student’s home with the restaurant treated as a separate pavilion. This first prize winning design by SANGRAD Architects + AVP Arhitekti creates a new square between both buildings, which is defined by the main entrance to the existing building and the new restaurant volume. Along with the student’s home on the west side, the restaurant has a visual connection with all three buildings through an access plaza, while the student’s home towards the east continues the structure of the existing house forming a block. More images and architects’ description after the break.

Varaždin, a historic city in northern part of Croatia, is known for its well-preserved Baroque architecture. The narrow streets, squares and parks, facades with its ornaments contribute to the identity of the city. The house is within walking distance of downtown. One-story house with the longer side of the façade along the street, is the most popular building type in this district since the 18th Century . Such houses met the needs of the residents and were in relation to city size.

The site of the building is unique among all other halls which has been built for the Handball World Cup 2009. The building itself is located next to the Drava river, which flows into the Danube close to the city of Osijek. It is surrounded with woods and meadows, and it is not at all 'urban', as it is described by the title of the project. It was big challenge to deal with two opposite terms - 'city sports hall' with all its programme, and the surrounding. It was wish of the city government to access the river – until now there were no public access to it, despite of the fact that it is consumed by the citizens of Varazdin for recreational purpose.
