La Piedra School is an architectural project for the Mapuche community of Galvarino, in the province of Temuco, the design arises from a respectful and deep dialogue with the community members, to understand and respect their cultural and spiritual particularities, proposing a school that meets their educational needs while preserving their identity as Mapuche people. From the beginning of our conversations, we understood that this school was a conventional educational establishment. It should reflect the rich cultural and spiritual heritage of the Mapuche community; circumference, cardinal points and orthogonality are fundamental elements in their worldview.

Chile has a rich and vast heritage architecture, which is gradually gaining relevance through different initiatives that seek to renovate these buildings to give them a second life. The buildings and infrastructures were in disrepair, disused, or damaged, but have great architectural value, being an important contribution to the reconstruction of the history of Chilean cities.

Just a seven-minute walk from the center of Temuco is the main entrance of Cerro Ñielol through Prat street. This axis links the foot of the hill to the other edge of the city, the Cautín River. In Chile, there are only seventeen declared natural monuments and one of them is the Ñielol hill. The ascent to the hill starts subtly by a winding path that follows the contour lines of the existing topography. This path formed by the density of shade from the foliage of native trees is suddenly illuminated by rays of light and landscape windows looking out over the city of Temuco.

The Railway Museum Pablo Neruda is located on the Roundhouse of Temuco, built between 1929 and 1941 in two phases, to serve as repairing facilities for steam locomotives that run over the first half of the 20th Century in Chile. In the ’80s, the whole Railway system suffered a decay that drifts on the abandonment of the building.

Context Description
We designed the Pavilion to represent Chile in Expo 2015 Milan. Always with the knowledge that the world fair will only last for six months and then the building should be dismantled to restore the site to its original condition. With that in our minds, in order to do a more sustainable project, we decided that the pavilion had to be rebuilt in a new place to extend its lifecycle. Therefore we designed a wooden Meccano like structure that could be easily assembled, disassembled, transported and reassembled in a new location back in Chile. We also designed its spaces flexible to host different uses and scenarios in the future. Once the Expo was finished it was decided that the new home for the pavilion was going to be Temuco, the capital city of the Araucanía Region. The chosen site was at the foot of national park Cerro Ñielol, a natural hill important for its proximity to the city center and for being a sacred place for the Mapuche (native inhabitants of the region).
