Urban Regeneration by the Canal - Taixing, situated in the south-central region of Jiangsu Province, stands as the convergence of Huai and Wu cultures. Established in the first year of Shengyuan during the Southern Tang Dynasty, it is a millennium-old city with a rich history. Historically, Taixing County was characterized by an intricate network of waterways, thriving alongside and in harmony with the water, and its fortified walls were constructed in the shape of a turtle's shell. Encircling the city were two moats, both inside and outside the walls, with several winding watercourses resembling snakes in between, forming a pattern reminiscent of the Black Tortoise and White Snake, commonly known as the " City laid out in the shape of a turtle and snake." In recent times, with the city's growth, a new urban layout gradually emerged to the north and east of the old city, intersected by the Rutai Canal and Qiangxi River. Notably, the Rutai Canal, linking the Yangtze River in the west and the Yellow Sea in the east, has served as a pivotal regional waterway spanning Rugao and Taixing since ancient times.

Three Spatial Designs in the Huangyan Grottoes / Atelier Moo

This is a set of spatial designs within the Huangyan Grottoes scenic area in Taizhou, Zhejiang. The renovation work was completed by architect Xu Tiantian's team. Our design task was to transform three areas into a cafe, a multifunctional design store, and a pop-up shop for an indie brand. Due to schedule pressures, no disruptive adjustments could be made to the completed infrastructure on site, such as paving and utility lines. One strategy is to use modular assembled furniture units as the main means of spatial organization. All the furniture is not fixed to the ground or stone walls, to reduce the damage to the original environment, also to minimize the on-site work, and make the construction easier and faster. Another strategy is to use as few units as possible to create three different spatial experiences by different combinations of the furniture units.

Spatial Intensity. Without density, there is no space, and pure space without people is even more meaningless. Spatial warmth refers to the amount of time people spend in a space per unit of time. The design of public spaces in the new campus of Jingjiang Senior High School in Jiangsu Province is based on this concept. It is built around the idea of student movement routes and forms spatial hotspots at locations where intersections are more likely.

The building is located in the heart of Cloud Valley, a new e-commerce district on the outskirts of Ningbo. The building’s initial role was to market and promote the Cloud Valley district, signifying the start of development while expressing the spirit of a new emerging economy.

The project is located on a complicated site, in the old city centre of Fuzhou, the capital of Fujian Province. With a Floor Area Ratio of 5,0 and many limiting conditions, a U-shaped floorpan manifested itself as optimum. The program required 400 apartments of 45-110 m2 in size, resulting in an stagering mass of identical units. Variety and diversity is created by manipulating the balconies around the building. Like the famous local ‘seal-stone’ or ‘shouxi-stone’, the balconies are crafted around the main building volume. This crafting creates a wide variety of individual apartments, each with their different exterior space.

A 43-year-old wooden house has been renovated based on the design that was jointly developed with the owner. The owner has two family members and moved in to this house 4 years ago. The majority of the house at the back was renovated when they moved in, except for the entrance, which had a waiting lobby for editors to wait for the previous owner, who happened to be a novelist. The waiting lobby took a decent amount of space despite the fact that it was not used in full. The owners wanted to use that space for parking, so we decided to scale down the house.

This design, which cuts away the Western corner from this extruded volume of the site, created a focal point within the house, while still enabling a connection to the surrounding exterior environment. The cutaway corner is able to establish a direct view onto the small hills west of the house, as well as retaining privacy from the street below. The use of natural wood material for the extruded volume itself allowed the design to incorporate a hard edge at the cutaway corner, creating a sharp and distinct separation from the rest of the design. This triangular surface edge also helps to break up the solid aspect of the design and somewhat control its presence onto the street.

Armadillo is located in Kamakura, Japan. With the sea to one side and the other 3 surrounded by mountains, this town’s topography provides ideal protection from enemy. This feature led Kamakura to become the political centre of Japan in the 12th century. This site is located in a valley with a very narrow approach road ,so the carpenter was required to fabricate off-site at their workshop. The clients- a couple,her father,two dogs and a cat - bought the site with its old house four years ago. The existing house was built in the 1930s and enlarged 35years ago(this existing house do not satisfy the present earthquake-resistant standards).

Among the increasing number of houses planned on small plots of land, this is out of the ordinary in shade and size, A 20-minute train ride from downtown Tokyo, 15-minuite walk from the station. It is a long, narrow trapezoid with a lower base of 3.2m as the frontage, height of 29.3m as the depth, and upper base of 0.7m at the very end of the site. Moreover, there is a local ordinance requiring a 0.5-meter set-back of external walls from the adjacent land. Conditions are extremely tough. From the moment Atelier Tekuto had looked through the site's situation, Atelier Tekuto organized a collaboration system consisting of the client, design, structure, construction and maker, then started off planning.
