Austria has announced Koncesija / Konzession / Concession(e) as its contribution to the 20th International Architecture Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia. Curated by architects Adna Babahmetović and Ajna Babahmetović together with curator Sebastian Höglinger, the project proposes temporarily granting the Austrian Pavilion to Bosnia and Herzegovina through a cooperative concession. Selected through Austria's open competition process, the pavilion examines questions of national representation, diplomacy, and architectural exchange by responding to the absence of a Bosnian national pavilion in the Giardini, where the Biennale's historic national pavilions are located.

A new model for sustainable urban living from Bosnia-Herzegovina, Zemlja, is an ecologically and economically viable retrofit apartment located in a former socialist neighborhood in Sarajevo. In a society still recovering from the Bosnian War and the Siege of Sarajevo in the 90s, Zemlja strives to rebuild a sense of place, home, and shared identity through architectural innovation. It raises the question: can rebuilding a home provide ideas for rebuilding a community, a city, or even a country?

This sustainable 100m² retrofit by Project V Architecture transforms a Sarajevo apartment—set in an Austro-Hungarian-era courtyard block—into a warm, immersive world crafted from natural materials. Designed for a young family, the home features cherry wood linings, clay-painted walls, stone worktops, linen curtains, travertine, and minimalist detailing. Its most surprising element: a bespoke prefabricated children's Tree house, made from spruce glulam. The apartment evokes a sense of timelessness, building on a rich history of minimalism and 20th century modernism from Sarajevo, and hosts a curated selection of contemporary Bosnian craft and artwork throughout.

Situated in an ordinary unplanned neighbourhood in Sarajevo, the Half House is a new studio extension and refurbishment of the ground floor of a typical Bosnian ‘family house’. The Half House has been designed for a wheelchair user and his wife by Projekt V Arhitektura. The studio extension is a new typology for the area: it is in between a detached studio house, a family gathering space, and a ‘weekend’ countryside house common to the region.

Landscape elements and natural environment determined the direction of the entire project. The basic idea of the design was to create a strong relationship between environment and interior.

Wave Housing is situated in Otes, the suburban neighbourhood of Sarajevo, with the river and mountains as its close and distant surroundings. In order to extend the interior space of the apartment towards outside and the views, the wave-like structure is added to the regulated building volume from 2nd floor upwards. In this way, each unit is given a lavish and unique outdoor area/terrace, making it a defining architectural element of the project. While the inner facade of the building is clad in warm wooden ribs, outside is kept simple in white plaster with metal screens providing additional visibility protections to the apartment terraces.

This part of the city's urban tissue started its development in the 19th century, during the Austro-Hungarian period of government. Therefore, in conceptual urbanistic terms, the space is organized in form of urban blocks and wide orthogonal streets.

Regarding urban survival, Sarajevo has become a powerful symbol and a lesson for current and future generations. The museum will be a unique depository of human knowledge – where human ingenuity, creativity and intelligence will be captured amidst the urban post-cataclysmic realm. It is a heritage snap-shot of faces and voices that have shaped the longest siege in the modern history of mankind. More images and architects’ description after the break.
