        <![CDATA[<p>From the get-go, our simplicity-loving clients, a couple with their three dogs, requested a compact house with a sunroom where everyone could come together. However, the land presented a certain challenge - it is located in a chaotic urban zone with high-rise buildings, landscape company facilities and parking lots with limited natural light. As a result, we started looking into different ways to handle natural light as well as to create an open space in this particular context. In addition, during this process, we realized that it would be important to design a dwelling place with a sense of psychological distance from its surroundings.</p>]]>

        <![CDATA[<p>The ‘360° House’ is a freestanding house located in the outskirt hills of <a href="/tag/sapporo">Sapporo</a> on the island of Hokkaido, Japan. The residence is designed around a circular courtyard with timber construction radiating outward into the interior of the building. The interior spaces are oriented towards the courtyard and follow the radial lines set out by the visible timber beams. The layout of the rooms is determined by a circular path of access wrapping around the courtyard, giving the dweller an ever-changing perspective of the courtyard and the interiors surrounding it. Hence, the dweller might see the courtyard function as an architectural clock; dynamically lighting up different parts of the building during the day and continually changing during the seasons. </p>]]>

While it is the smallest among all the DESCENTE BLANC stores, we took advantage of its relatively wide storefront to display the merchandize effectively by installing a vertically movable hanger bar system perpendicular to the storefront.</p>]]>

        <![CDATA[<p>Tohaku Hasegawa’s “<em>Shorin-zu </em>(Pine Trees)” is delicately and boldly drawn with much blank space left on the canvas. It looks incomplete but is very attractive because of the existence of the blank space (ground), on which we can imagine and envision various things that are not actually drawn. The relationship between the figure and the ground in Western art is also a topic close to the above. Lucio Fontana’s “<em>Attese</em> (Spatial Concepts: Expectation)” was made by accurately cutting the painted canvas to create the ground in the figure, building a new relationship between the figure and the ground.</p>]]>

        <![CDATA[<p>This project involved the remodeling of a church founded 50 years ago. Located in a suburb of <a href="/tag/sapporo">Sapporo</a>, the church stands in a residential area near the Olympic Memorial Park, facing a tree-lined avenue. The church runs a kindergarten, with which it shares the site. The lot is not square and has little leeway in terms of space. This remodeling plan required us to maximize the church space in order to achieve openness, while retaining the original functions of the church.</p>]]>

        <![CDATA[<p>With an area of around one hectare, the site is located within Shikotsu-Toya National Park in Hokkaido. Near the site there is a renowned hot spring village, Jozankei Onsen. The site is about 10 minutes’ drive from there, standing alone in the mountains, and you can appreciate the original Hokkaido landscape. On my first visit to the site, I felt a bit fearful at the power of nature. So the beginning point of my idea was this fear. I wanted to turn this feeling from fear into delight.</p>]]>

        <![CDATA[<p>This is a house with a space that looks like an interior as well as an exterior. The space has a large air volume, covered with a roof and translucent surface which keep off the rain and wind. However, it doesn't have heat insulation performance. It could be positioned on the extension of the Japanese traditional earth floor or the sun room seen in houses of Hokkaido. Here we call it a "terrace" because it is a half-exterior space that is bright and open. From spring to autumn, it works as a part of the living space. And in winter it works like a glasshouse, which keeps off the severe cold.</p>]]>

        <![CDATA[<p>The house is located on a corner site at the bottom of a sloping road in a residential district with some remaining natural elements, in the southeast region of <a href="/tag/sapporo">Sapporo</a> City, Hokkaido. The site naturally has a 1.4-meter gap at the ground level, but we chose to keep it untouched at an early stage due to the limited budget. After considering several schemes, we finalized a split level scheme utilizing the 1.4-meter gap, equivalent to 1/2 of the floor height, without much difficulty.</p>]]>
