In 2024, SHISUO Design Office was commissioned by Aranya to reimagine the lobby spaces within the podium levels of two mountain-view residences in Sanya. The original architecture leveraged the site's elevation differential: while one side of the podium nestles against the hillside, a narrow lightwell pierces through the interior; the opposite side connects to terraced platforms, forming the residents' homecoming gateway. A covered corridor acts as a prelude to homecoming. Walls clad in volcanic rock create framed window openings that capture exterior landscapes or assemble into a perforated screen, allowing light to filter through gaps. These contrasts of light and shadow introduce rhythm to the elongated space, mediating between the exterior and interior realms.

The project is located on a small island called West Island in Sanya. It is a commercial renovation of a self-built residence in a fishing village, with a nearly perfect sea view close to the coastline. Unlike other seashores in Sanya with a strong commercial atmosphere, the current West Island has not yet broken away from the simplicity of the original fishing village. Here, it seems easier to immerse yourself in the sense of natural relaxation brought by the sea. Making good use of sea view resources is the basic commercial concern in this project, but doing so alone is obviously not enough for us to respond the site. We hope to strengthen the emotional value of this place by interacting with the sea.

In this project, the focus is on creating a seamless connection with the hotel's overall vibe and balancing the needs of the hotel and the new businesses. The Jinghope · Life Aesthetics Community connects with the main entrance of the hotel and stands in the circulation route leading to the guest room area, injecting vitality into the public space through the addition of a new circulation. The newly built spiral staircase connects the ground floor to the second floor, directing visitors from the ground floor to the commercial space. Nestled amidst lush vegetation, the open-air contemplation and relaxation areas seamlessly integrate with the indoors.

The city of Sanya in Hainan, China, has selected Zaha Hadid Architects as the winner of the competition for the design of the city’s new harborside cultural district. The new development, measuring a total of 409,000 square meters of built area, aims to become a central location for Sanya’s cultural life, providing diverse programming for performing arts, theater, exhibition galleries, conferences, and commercial trade fairs. The fluid shape of the buildings creates a transition from the tropical waters of Sanya Bay to the urban fabric of the city, with a central axis dividing the layered roofs that feather outwards and dematerialize the architectural volume.

In the post-real estate era, the regional comprehensive development mode guided by the health industry in a broad sense is becoming a blue ocean to be excavated. In the context of format iteration, the definition of architectural type with a single function has gradually failed. We try to find a kind of flexible space to accommodate the needs of different scenes, blur the clear boundary between medical facilities and hotels, and accommodate the diverse scenes of health and vacation. We will create a landscaped courtyard in a tropical climate to build a new model of future medical and healthcare that responds to the transformation needs of the times. —— Fanhao Meng

Büro Ole Scheeren has revealed the design for a tropical resort complex in Sanya, one of China’s most popular holiday destinations. The project establishes a strong connection with its natural environment, amplifying the presence of lush greenery. The stacked volumes create a curved façade embracing the ocean and amplifying the panorama, while the offsets and openings create the opportunity for natural plantings throughout the building, bringing to life a version of the hanging gardens.

Housing Corporation VANKE recently asked NL Architects to make a proposal for a Super Market as part of a big resort in Sanya, the southernmost city in China. Renowned for its tropical climate and for being a popular tourist destination, the site of the resort will consist of three clusters of large residential slabs of 21 stories high enveloping semi enclosed gardens. The public space plays a crucial role in the atmosphere of the area as a whole so a lot of consideration is going into creating a pleasant environment. More images and architects’ description after the break.

Shengdetang (Hall of Grand Virtue), located in Sanya City, Hainan Province, was a private mansion built by the descendants of a famous Prime Minister named Peidu in Tang Dynasty after their family was outlawed and settled down in the village. Dating back to year 20, during the reign of Shaoxing in the Song Dynasty, when the famous patriotic Prime Minister Huquan inscribed for the mansion, Shengdetang has a history of nearly 850 years. After repeated destruction and reconstruction, only the north part of the main hall and the newly renovated north penthouse still remain. Based on archaeological excavations and status quo survey, a protection and display plan was proposed.
