"When the phrase 'we cannot see the forest for the trees' is repeated, its exact meaning might not be fully understood. Perhaps the mockery hidden behind the phrase turns against the one who utters it. The trees do not let us see the forest, and thanks to that, the forest exists. The mission of the visible trees is to make the rest remain latent, and only when we realize that the visible landscape hides other invisible landscapes do we feel inside a forest." — Meditations on Quixote. Depth and Surface — José Ortega y Gasset (1914)

A pre-existing colonial tile house, near the lake and in the middle of the forest. San Bernardino, is a city where poetry becomes material. We abstract the essence of the house and deconstruct it. The long horizontal strokes that arise from the existing turn the object into a landscape. The "genius loci" manifests itself through the forest, and therefore understanding its essence would constitute the field of work where the idea is constructed. A tree articulates the translation of the access between thick earth walls built with the soil of the place. A door reveals it.

Much more interesting and I would even say exciting, is the story that makes him fly to Paraguay.

Between the stones and the water. A lot located in the mountain range of Los Altos, treading geographically within the city of San Bernardino, with romantic sunset views over the famous Ypacaraí lake, which has become the historical scene of the summer life of many Paraguayans, is the site where we were summoned to project a weekend house to be enjoyed by families and friends. With a rugged topography and rocky terrain, the picturesque and steep location suggested the idea of implementing the program in such a way to generate a stepped succession of terraces that allow users to enjoy the landscape from different perspectives and times of the day.

This 3,200 sf single-family residence and accompanying 800 sf pool house were envisioned as a refuge cradled within the foothills of the San Bernardino National Forest. The design uses a series of thickened walls which run east-west along the topography of the dramatic mountain site to establish discrete programmatic zones and protect the interiors from the sun. Each resulting zone affirms its connection to the surrounding hillside, extending to outdoor living areas and into the landscape beyond, while the thickened walls demarcate successively more private areas of the house.
