A Project in Motion: The Story Behind the Market Square in Realengo Park

Before any drawing or formal decision, a space in constant motion was already pulsing where the Market Square at Realengo Park stands today in Rio de Janeiro. Improvised stalls, informal gatherings, music, children running, and adults gathered under makeshift shelters made up a living landscape, shaping an ephemeral architecture.

The Realengo Susana Naspolini Park was inaugurated in mid-June in the Realengo neighborhood in the West Zone of Rio de Janeiro. The park is part of an initiative by the City Hall, the Environmental Department, and the Parks and Gardens Foundation to create new urban parks in the city through public tenders. The local population and social movements claimed the land for more than 20 years and requested that the 160,000 m² of the former Army cartridge factory be transformed into a public park. In 2021, the City Hall received half of the land area as a donation and launched a public notice to develop the basic park project on the site. After the bidding process, we were selected to draft the Basic Project. The following year, a new tender was opened to elaborate on the executive project and the construction work. The winning construction company then hired our office to continue the project in the executive phase while the work was supervised by the Parks and Gardens Foundation.

The Market Square is part of the architectural complex of Parque Realengo, still under construction. The Park has been the subject of long-standing questioning by various social movements that debate the periphery, green areas and environmental racism. Like several construction processes in the city of Rio de Janeiro, its dynamics also involve expropriations and relocation processes. The Market Square is born from a pre-existing condition. Before its design, residents surrounding the park occupied the corner with small commercial buildings. The proposed architectural project provided for the full relocation of these buildings, however, the complex dynamics of a bidding process and execution of a public work meant that only part of the proposal was carried out.
