Though the initial brief was to rehabilitate an existing dilapidated villa, we realized that with a similar investment in time and budget, it would be preferable to demolish the existing building and construct a new one that would be better adapted to its role as an embassy.

CoCo architecture, representative of the project management team, was named the winner of the international competition organized by the French Embassy and the AEFE for the renovation and extension of the Lycée Français Descartes in Rabat. The project management team consists of CoCo architecture as lead contractor, Arpio architect as co-contractor, Diagonale, AcousticA, and BASE paysage. The openwork architecture, which connects directly with the tree canopy and creates a play of green spaces and patios, was particularly noteworthy at the AFEX 2023 awards. The French high school in Rabat has 200 students, from sixth grade to preparatory classes. Cramped in old buildings spread across two sites on either side of an avenue, the school launched this huge project to streamline and improve its aging facilities. The new buildings, therefore, have the dual purpose of resolving functional issues and creating a new, attractive image that contributes to France's cultural influence in Morocco.

Upon entering, the visitor finds himself in a particular site, open and wooded, that offers depths of field that provide a sense of well-being, favorable for the practice of outdoor sports. Surrounded by dense and tall windbreak hedges, the site is introverted, protected from its immediate environment. The landscape framework of the plot, reflecting the agricultural past of the suburbs of Rabat whose traces are still present in the area, is indeed characterized by its tall trees which are typically the orchards’ windbreak hedges.
