Our proposal for the extension and renovation of Gabrielle-Roy Library aims to spread the public functions throughout the building in order to inhabit its different strata. On each floor, both in the existing building and its extension, a new interface with the collections and the city is proposed. The experience of the library becomes a rich path oscillating between projection and introversion.

Now dividing his time between practice and teaching at the School of Architecture of Laval University in Quebec City, architect Jean Verville, appealed by the brutalist architecture punctuating the national capital with significant buildings, established his creative laboratory in a residential tower, designed in the 1970s by architect Marcel Bilodeau, and standing out as a monumental sculpture facing the Plains of Abraham Park. The rehabilitation of a compact 79m unit is deployed in an architectural experiment orchestrating a space with a graphic dimension. Like an observation post offering breathtaking views of the Laurentian Mountains, the urban landscape, and the St Lawrence River, the interior comes alive with an immutable body-to-body relationship between transparency and reflection, while transforming realities through distancing and multiplication.

The Alma-24 project is located on the northwest shore of Lake Saint-Jean, the third-largest lake in the province of Quebec (Canada). Offering breathtaking panoramic views, the shoreline landscape alternates between miles of sandy beaches and imposing rugged rocky surfaces. The site was home to an abandoned summer pavilion partially erected on the protected coastal strip. Sensitive to the protection of the territory and the revaluation of its natural features, the new owners wanted to build the single-family residence on a renaturalized site. The first stage of dismantling the deteriorated structures made it possible to restore the natural profile of the topography, revealing its original identity, and determining the location of the future residence while minimizing deforestation.

In order to understand the origins of the residence’s name, we have to go back to the story of one of its two inhabitants. During his childhood, this man used to live on the family-owned farm in the Centre-du-Québec region. When he grew older, his parents left him a sizable portion at the far end of their land that they could not cultivate. Literally meaning the “far end” Les Abouts remained unoccupied for quite some time. After a couple of years spent abroad, it became obvious to the owner that he should colonize the parcel of land he had inherited. Therefore, he and his partner together decided to have a secondary residence built on Les Abouts. As art collectors and enthusiasts, they decided they wanted wide spaces to showcase their various acquisitions throughout the house.

The project aimed to question the relationship that Quebeckers have with their built heritage. We were trying to create a distinctive element, in contrast to the highly touristic environment it’s questioning. The pink monolithic passage generates the illusion of a crossing; It offers visitors a colorful and immersive experience that plunges them into another universe that passes through a historical piece of architecture.

For the ‘High House’, DELORDINAIRE plays with the limit between interior and exterior, inviting people to gather in spaces immersed in nature. Elevated stilt constructions are typically used in warm climates and flood zones. This energy efficient winter chalet uses stilt typology to create a protected ground floor area with an outdoor stove. Providing an unusual space where residents can be amongst nature and the snowy exterior, while still enjoying some protection from the elements.

For a summer, Le Banc de neige recreates the magical snowbanks left over from Quebec’s winter storms. At once a platform and a public bench, the ephemeral installation modifies the user’s relation to the public space by allowing a multitude of appropriations. As it drapes around the tree trunks and street lamps of the Place de Bordeaux with a luminous white, it magnifies these elements of the everyday while providing seating platforms for the pétanque court. These multiple bases are generated by a series of topographical contours alluding to architectural representation. Passers-by are invited to settle in and take break by contemplating the urban landscape of St-Paul Street, while the most adventurous will climb the snowbank to hide in the dense foliage of trees, sheltered from the street.

The idea to build a multifunctional arena in Quebec City began in 2009 with the creation of the group “J’ai ma place” (which translate in a double meaning : I have my seat/I belong here), which had the mission to revive the popular craze for the return of a team professional hockey in the old capital. The project, strongly supported by the mayor of the city, has quickly captured the attention of the media and citizens. It’s in 2012 that the mandate to design this project was officially granted to the SAGP integrated team. The Videotron Centre is now a unifying project for an entire population, proud to have witnessed the birth of a unique infrastructure of its kind in the heart of the Quebec City region.
