Its geological location, situated on the edges of the Eurasian and Philippine Sea plates, has resulted in a predominantly mountainous and rugged topography.
The countryside has increasingly been the topic of discussion in recent years. From urban planning and land use zoning, there is an ambiguity of mixed-use structure that often wanders on the edge of regulations. It has brought many chaotic, rough but self-contained miniature spatial patterns. In Zhutian, we try to explore how to regenerate the structures left by the agricultural relics through several projects. Dexing Rice Factory, built in 1942, is the grain bureau for the rural area of Pingtung in southern Taiwan. Once a place for rice storage and for children to play and it has remained the Hakka house (Huo fáng) in everyone's mind.

On an ocean front mountain top between tall grasses and acacia forests, rugged curvaceous walls blur the boundaries between architecture and landscape to define public and private spaces of an 8 room retreat. The retreat, thus named Wandering Walls, is a building where the walls “wander” throughout like flowing ribbons. The remote location is susceptible to gale-force winter winds, sea salt in the atmosphere, and had no access road prior to construction. Furthermore, the lack of skilled construction labor and the shoestring project budget drove the decision to use cast in place concrete early on at the concept phase for its climatic endurance, ease of transport and storage on site.

HAO Design strives to achieve an optimal balance between space and lighting, which is why we chose to employ design methods that address the various limitations of the building. First, the partition walls of the mezzanine were removed, so that the 1.5-story floor height became the visual divide of the entire interior space. The upper floor was transformed into an open library, so that light that is introduced by taking away the partitions can stream into the ground-level living room. The large window framing the dining area affords maximum lighting, while the rescaled and leveled window ledge naturally evolved into seating for the dining table.

This is JR Architects’ first built public competition project. The site is located in the countryside of Southern Taiwan. The goal was to demolish the existing imminently dangerous school and replace it with a multi-functional campus that can both accommodate children education and senior day care.‘Whale’ is the design concept of the project since the site is adjacent to the Taiwan Strait. The massing symbolizes a giant whale swimming in and embrace the site to guard the children.

In this project, the home is more than 60 years old. Although it is a three-sectioned compound, it is not laid out in a traditional “embracing the courtyard” fashion. This reflects the fact that the previous home owners built it up section by section based on the clan’s economic means. It is close to Pingtung railway station. Because this part of town was developed earlier in history and the demographics have aged over time, the homes in this area include a mix of independent houses, makeshift temporary houses and three-sectioned compounds. From the rooftop, one can observe the passage of time through the style of buildings. When we first started the project, the roof was caving in like ruins. My task was to figure out how to “adapt” the home to a modern lifestyle without tearing down most of the walls, even though some of them were already crumbled.
