This week, we revisited the ideas currently shaping the design of 21st-century cities, with a view toward a longer timeframe than that which characterised modern design. These examples of today's urban design point toward the cities of tomorrow, seeking to reflect collective memory and social identity while addressing the climate challenges we face today. From a new museum in Panama drawing on Latin American architectural tradition to an inflatable installation on Paris's oldest bridge over the Seine, built and not-yet-built projects rescue architecture as a repository of collective memory, while others explore its transformative potential through the lens of contemporary well-being. In this weekly news compilation, we present ongoing projects from Panama, numerous African countries, France, Canada, Italy, Australia, and the United States.

MAC Panamá Selects Palma + Taller TO to Design Its New Museum Building

Following an international design competition launched in January 2026, the Museum of Contemporary Art of Panama (MAC Panamá) announced the selection of Mexican architects Palma + Taller TO to design its new building. The museum is described as "a new cultural infrastructure open to the city, conceived from the identity, climate, and landscape of Panama." The future museum headquarters will be located in the corregimiento of San Francisco, to consolidate the area as a hub of cultural activity. The selection criteria involved the relationship between the museum and the city, prioritizing proposals with integrated elements for community engagement and framing the building as a cultural infrastructure, enriching the contemporary urban environment of Panama City.

Land use and transformation — The site is located to the north of Palma, in a heterogeneous area that has been urbanized in several phases. Low-density housing and agricultural areas predominate. The structural solution is inspired by traditional systems, where the structure itself defines and houses the spaces, integrating load-bearing and habitability functions.

On the plot where the Social Housing were built, primarily intended for the elderly, there was a building that we were obliged to demolish due to its non-compliance with urban planning regulations and its poor condition—there was no possibility of preserving it. It was a small, disused three-story school constructed with structural sandstone (marès) walls and concrete and ceramic ceilings.

Montisión House / Jordi Herrero Arquitecto

Casa Montisión is an architectural intervention that transforms an old shop in Palma de Mallorca into a contemporary home while preserving the history and character of the original building. Located in the heart of the old town, directly across from the Church of Montisión, the house features an L-shaped floor plan with access to two narrow streets and a small interior patio, which influences the natural light and ventilation within the space.

The land where the house is situated has a steep slope ascending from the street, offering breathtaking views of the Bay of Palma. The governing regulations for the plot play a decisive role: buildings are required to consist primarily of a main body with an essentially rectangular plan, a simple volumetric design, and a sloping roof finished with traditional ceramic tiles.

Paral·lel is a residential project in the quiet neighborhood of La Bonanova, southwest of Palma, with two independent blocks. Taking advantage of the pb+3 regulations, the buildings are designed so that the 12 houses, despite the density and limited space, enjoy sustainability, energy efficiency, and privacy with small-sized private gardens and pools. Some houses are duplexes, 6 on the ground floor with garden and pool, and 6 penthouses with rooftop pools and panoramic views of the bay of Palma, Cala Mayor, and Illetas.

Can Santacilia is a 3,300 m2 residential project with 15 dwellings and common areas. It is a careful renovation of two buildings located in the heart of Palma de Mallorca's old town. The buildings date back to the 12th or 13th century, although the building visible from Plaça Tagamanent was registered in the city archives in 1576 as Can Santacilia. Since then, both buildings have suffered several modifications, consequently the existing state prior to the OHLAB project is from the 17th century, with a subsequent reform in the 18th century. In addition, both buildings underwent alterations during the 20th century aimed at dividing and converting them into several dwellings, as a result, we found them highly modified compared to their original state.

The construction of the first five out of the seven buildings that make up Project Gomila in Palma de Mallorca is complete. Designed by MVRDV and GRAS Reynés Arquitectos, Project Gomila is a collection of buildings, each with their own individual character derived from their colors, materials, and rooflines, that is transforming the area around Plaza Gomila in the neighborhood of El Terreno. Adding a total of 60 new dwellings of various sizes and types, as well as new commercial spaces, after one phase Project Gomila is already well on the way to reviving El Terreno as a vibrant, green, sustainable residential neighborhood.

12VoltRetreat - #1 Siurell is a case study pilot to renew a series of existing traditional sheds and shelters into temporary sybaritic outside dens sited in rural Mallorca. Throughout the island’s agricultural fields these traditional stone shelters were built to act as refuges (to take cover and or/rest) for hunters and shepherds and also act as storage units for labor tools. The simple local mares stone construction walls and the light ceramic + tile roofing plus the small size footprint they occupy,( they range from 5 to 20 sq meters) make them very recognizable across the island. Currently, many of them are in disuse but still keep the outside enveloping structure intact, with the added value that most of them are sited in idyllic locations.
