As 2025 unfolded, the discipline, confronted with evolving environmental and social realities, entered a broader turning point in how it understands its role and how users engage with it. Throughout the year, exhibitions shifted focus away from buildings as isolated objects toward a broader understanding of relationships between ecology, equity, everyday life, and collective imaginaries. Across institutions and cities, they operated less as showcases and more as discursive platforms: places where architecture was not only presented, but also imagined, questioned, and collectively redefined.

Biennales, exhibitions, and architecture focused festivals provide a platform for opening debates, conducting research, and driving innovation, but they can also contribute to the incremental changes that shape the image and the character of a city. Through temporary installations and experiments, this type of events have the opportunity to open lines on inquiry into the quality of urban spaces, inviting visitors and residents to slow down, break away from their daily routine and interrogate their local environments. The effects might not be immediate, but by cumulating these impressions and moments of contemplation, architecture and design festivals can have a long-lasting impact on the cities that welcome them.

Grouphug, the NYC-based design collective, invites emerging and established designers from all disciplines to submit their work for its 2018 NYC Design Week show: RESPECT ME.

RESPECT ME is a design show about female empowerment.
From the beginning of time, women seemingly fall short in comparison to men. They are viewed as inferior and as a result are paid less, underrepresented in the government and almost every industry, subject to sexual harassment, and not guaranteed basic reproductive rights. Underneath the myriad of issues, there is an inherent lack of respect. Half of the world’s population is female, why are they
