Cultural institutions represent an active field for unbuilt architectural exploration, reflecting how architects continue to question the role of public buildings in shaping urban life. In this Unbuilt edition, submitted by the ArchDaily community, the selected proposals bring together a range of projects that engage with museums, exhibition centers, and diplomatic buildings as sites of public encounter. Rather than treating these programs as fixed types, these projects approach them as evolving spatial settings through which cities engage with history, knowledge, and representation.

The area of the former Nuremberg freight station is currently being under fundamental transformation. In the coming years, it will develop into a large office and retail district. The Kohlektiv will be developed to be the center of the new area. Back in the day, the head office of the former freight station was located in the building. The building stands for further development of the site out of the existing buildings and will serve as a historical reference point to the former freight station. Together with the planned new buildings, an advantageous (architectural) mixture is created, which has an identity-forming effect.

The building shows how we imagine people living in the future. The rooftop garden increases the biodiversity of cities, enhances the air quality, and cools down the building through shading and water vaporization. Furthermore, the residents share the garden to grow vegetables and fruits close to their homes. The idea of community is a cornerstone of this project. The image of the building is based on its historic appearance, which was demolished during the bombing of World War II. Unfinished, raw, and open, the architectural volume is a representation of its own remains

The interior fit-out of the building was designed by Swiss architecture and design studio Evolution Design, while the building itself was created by Austrian architecture firm Baumschlager Eberle and executed by Nuremberg architects GP Wirth Architekten. The building was the result of a design competition in which the pioneering design brief already had easyCredit’s visions and values in mind: transparency, openness and communication incorporated in its internal space concept and modesty and simplicity displayed in its external appearance. The resulting office building encompasses over 15'000 m2 (160’000 ft2) of large open-space work areas.

The new information centre, designed by Studio DMTW, aims to be the central representative identification point in the overall context of the Georg-Simon-Ohm-Hochschule. With the program including a library with an open reading area, individual working spaces, and several seminar and meeting facilities, the design stipulates a clear structuring for all the functions with regard to both the outdoor areas and the new building itself. More images and architects’ description after the break.
