"Ay" (硋) is a type of black-glazed ceramic indigenous to the mountainous region of northeastern Fujian, positioned between pottery and porcelain. The site is a century-old traditional Ay kiln built against a hillside, forming an elongated, sloped "dragon kiln." Situated at the village entrance and flanked by open fields, the site exhibits characteristics of a rural handicraft compound: the kiln sits at the center, an old rammed-earth house to the west, a modern brick-and-concrete dwelling to the east, and several stone outbuildings scattered around.

To tackle the global climate crisis and achieve China's "dual-carbon" goals, CATL has shifted its focus from the remarkable achievements in the field of new energy batteries to creating green, intelligent, and livable urban environments. The Möbius strip, a symbol of perpetual cycles, inspired the teahouse's design. Unlike passive energy-saving techniques, this project actively empowers the building with advanced new energy and intelligent interconnectivity technologies.

Zhuguanlong Township in Shouning County, Fujian Province of China, where the Tea Leaf Market is located, was a tea-rich but poverty-stricken region with vast tea fields and a moso bamboo forest in its mountains. To boost the local tea leaf trading economy, the government and villagers proposed a multi-functional tea leaf market near a bus stop. It could also provide the villagers with a quality public space for gathering, leisure activities, and sharing business opportunities. As a result, a big open space with a large span was built with local materials, craftsmen and building technologies. It could be flexibly used throughout the year with low maintenance costs. Apart from seasonal tea leaf trading, it can serve multiple public purposes. (farm produce trading, festival celebrations, weddings, funerals, outdoor film projection, and children's activities)

The site is located at the west end of a bridge as the entrance of Qianfenxi Village, north of Fujian Province in China. Being close to the stream, while being hidden behind the terrain and houses along the road, this site becomes a certain junction in between nature and man-made. As the starting point of local vitalization, the original grain factory which is closed and chaotic needs to be renovated into an open rural art center. Thus the design thinking starts as following: how to form an open and vivid public space at the entrance of the village, how to sort out or even rebuild a space order among the randomly arranged exiting buildings, and how to achieve space quality within a limited budget by using locally feasible construction method.
