The wetness of grass after rain, the umami of a mild breeze, the electric burst of popping candy, or the velvety surrender of melting cheese each becomes a moment of shared synesthesia, a reminder that taste might extend far beyond the body.

The building of the former annex of the Montpellier Music Conservatory, located in the heart of the Écusson district and in close proximity to the Saint-Pierre Cathedral, holds significant heritage value. Since it was acquired by the Ursulines in 1679 to establish the Saint-Charles House, the complex has undergone numerous modifications and substantial densification, particularly during the 20th century. Our intervention consisted of a complete rehabilitation of the building to accommodate the Pierre and Colette Soulages Primary School. To achieve this, we adopted a subtractive approach. Through a meticulous process of archaeological assessment and identification of remarkable elements, we developed a methodology for preserving and reinforcing key features while making bold decisions about demolitions to recover the site's essence.

Above all, it was the generosity of the garden that captivated the owners and led them to acquire this 1960s Languedoc villa, which was not entirely to their taste. For the owners, the priority was to rid the house of the profusion of artificial elements (false fireplaces, false arches, false beams...) to rediscover a true architectural expression. The volume of the house was considerably simplified, and the newly simplified forms became more pronounced.

The Montpellier Architecture School, situated in the Plan des 4 Seigneurs district, has undergone a significant transformation to embrace ecological priorities. The renovation project serves as a model of responsible architecture and an educational tool, aiming to balance heritage preservation with eco-friendly adaptations. Originally built in 1970, the school has seen various alterations, some in harmony with the original design and others not. In today's context, ecological transitions are crucial not only in architecture but across society. The project aimed to integrate architectural rehabilitation with thermal renovation, preserving the existing while accompanying the building in its ecological transition.

Context - An emblematic urban development project in the Montpellier metropolitan area, the Port Marianne district stems from an ambitious vision to extend the city towards the sea. To the west, on the banks of the Lez, the Port Marianne ZAC, developed by A+Architecture, marked the first step in this significant urban project. To the east, on the banks of the Lironde, the République ZAC designed by Nicolas Michelin represents the culmination, both physically and temporally, of this city's extension towards the Mediterranean. It will extend beyond its boundaries by organizing the southern entrance of Montpellier and creating a new urban facade that is visible from major national and international transportation infrastructures (A709, A9, and the high-speed rail line).
