Khan Bonshek has completed the retrofit and refurbishment of the Pyramid House, a postmodern exhibition home originally designed for the 1981 Homeworld Expo in Milton Keynes. One of 36 architectural landmark homes originally built by Milton Keynes Development Corporation to exhibit future trends in technology and housing, Pyramid House required a thoughtful and strategic update over 40 years on to create a modern, energy-efficient home for contemporary owners. The clients, a young couple, had lived in a traditional townhouse in Islington for many years and wanted a distinct change, seeking an architecturally interesting property in a quiet yet commutable location to the city.

In the race to bring driverless cars from a futuristic fantasy to a present-day reality, developers have touted a plethora of advantages, from reduced traffic congestion on roads to improved safety thanks to the elimination of human error. But the potential widespread implementation of driverless cars could also have profound impacts on the form of our urban environments, fundamentally reshaping infrastructure and land use. As recently as a year ago, this new technology was seen as decades away; however, recently Elon Musk, CEO of electric car maker Tesla, predicted that driverless cars will be capable of making cross-country treks within about two years, and a pilot program in the United Kingdom city of Milton Keynes plans to launch a fleet of driverless pod-taxis by 2018, matching Musk’s timeline.

Located in the historic railway town of Wolverton, this project owned by the Parks Trust, creates 13,677ft2 office space within existing grade II listed structures. Designed by the award winning Hinton Cook Architects, the brief was to renovate and convert the old farm buildings, contrasting the old with the new and exposing the historic structure creating new stylish and contemporary offices within. Set within generous mature landscape, attention to landscaping and respect for context was critical to help the design continue to blend harmoniously within its rural surroundings. Key to the success of the project was the juxtaposition of modern and traditional elements. The sensitive approach to this historic building ensured the contrast between old and new forms delivered in a sophisticated way highlighting the contrast between the two.
