"Surreally so Real" confronts the limitations of commercial architecture in Hongdae while proposing an alternative. In this dense urban district, most commercial buildings prioritize maximum exposure in order to secure higher rents. Interiors and streets are often separated only by thin walls or show windows, yet this very condition reinforces the dichotomy between inside and outside. This project distances itself from that logic by introducing a buffer zone between the two realms, allowing the city itself to enter the building. In doing so, it recalls traditional architectural strategies in which space negotiates relationships rather than being reduced to pure market efficiency.

Tan Hapjeong is the second location of the Tan brand, following the first store in Yeonnam, both designed by oftn Studio. Before beginning the design of the Hapjeong branch, two primary points were emphasized. The first was to create a space with a distinctly different mood from the Yeonnam store. Interestingly, before starting the design, the team explored the hair portfolios and social media profiles of the designers who would work in this space. The goal was to reflect the personality and style of the actual users in the design, thereby completing the brand's identity. The client also aimed to differentiate this location by appealing to designers with unique styles or those pursuing alternative approaches to hairstyling compared to the first store.

We analyzed the approach to the old building, the role of the fence and garden, the exterior materials, and the shape of the roof, and metaphorized them to the new building. The first floor is the client's design office, the second and third floors are rental offices, and the fourth and fifth floors are the client's residence.

The main concept is visual simplicity. The design was made up of functional elements except for the most decorative elements. Fortunately, the architect's taste and our taste matched well. Windows, exterior materials, and interior materials were all simplified, so it was our purpose not to mix various materials. The design of the elevation is also planned with geometric figures and consists only of regular straight lines and curves. Red bricks were selected because there were many buildings built with red bricks in the area, and they wanted to fit in with the neighborhood by applying modern red bricks to the old neighborhood, taking advantage of a large number of commercial and residential, young and old people.
