The new primary school was built using a hybrid timber construction method with a high degree of prefabrication. Thanks to its space-saving design, an existing building could continue to be used. The competition brief had called for the school to be built first and then, once an existing building was demolished, a new sports hall would be built in its place. The chosen solution allowed both new buildings to be built at the same time without encroaching on the existing school wing, which, in fact, continues to be used.

Mannheim, a city in southwest Germany, is known for its square-grid layout, its palace, and its city landmark – the Wasserturm (water tower) and its baroque gardens. In the northern part of Mannheim, the city center – interrupted by the Neckar River – borders the districts of Neckarstadt West and East. This direct location on the river has led to the development of a green corridor – the Neckarwiese – as an urban open space, which is used by the city’s citizens for leisure and sports activities. Upstream, in the direction of the university hospital, there is a publicly accessible basketball court on Hermann-Heinrich-Ufer, which has been badly damaged by various floods in recent years.

Atmospherically, the district is characterized by a reductive architectural idiom inspired by pre-existing architecture. The development is distinguished by a well-defined canon of materials and by solid brick construction that dispenses with additional insulation.

The new construction of the research and teaching building is located on the city square B6 in the centre of Mannheim. The angular form of the house is derived from the restoration of the strict block structure, which is the landmark in the city of Mannheim. The main access points have an important urban integration: The main entrance to the new building is located on the street. The entrance area though is designed as a passage to the interior of the block, so that an equal access results also from there. While the block edge is formed by a relatively narrow building structure, the components oriented towards the block interior get a greater building depth in order to arrange special uses such as seminar rooms and group work rooms.

They enclose a central atrium and are linked via galleries, terraces, and bridges. In analogy to the elements that make up urban environments—buildings, blocks, streets, and squares—varied circular routes are created for the visitors through closed and open spaces with changing vistas and outlooks.

A very unusual loft has been created in the Mannheim harbor district. The complete ajando team will live and work there starting in January 2013. The internationally renowned architect Peter Stasek and the loftwerk architect office located in Karlsruhe are behind the corporate architecture concept of the loft. It was inspired by the quantum physics of Wheeler, the architecture of Josef M. Hoffmann and, of course, the information expertise of ajando.

Just this past Monday, gmp Architekten was awarded the contract to design the new Kunsthalle Mannheim, a decision made by the Kunsthalle‘s jury. Their winning design portrays a symbolic identity, both on the outside and on the inside. The idea was to create a place that is easily remembered, and which appeals with its functional and urban quality. Analogous to the chess board type layout of Mannheim’s inner city, the design is a composition of several cubes, the regularity of which is however broken by an offset arrangement in terms of height and width, and also by the arrangement of squares within the development. More images and architects’ description after the break.
