Álvaro Siza writes in the descriptive memory of the renovation of the Casa d'Abreu Neto: "It was on April 20, 2022, that I returned to the first house I designed, this time to renovate it. After 65 years since its construction, it was natural for a profound intervention to be necessary while maintaining the authenticity of the house…". The Casa d'Abreu Neto is now a space for public enjoyment, establishing itself as a living museum of modern Portuguese architecture and preserving the family memory that gave rise to it.

Situated on a lot commonly referred to as a "terreno de gaveta" in Portuguese, this type of site is characterized by being narrow and deep, typically sandwiched between neighboring buildings with limited frontage. The plot in question measures 10 meters by 18 meters, totaling 180 square meters. Given the small size, it was a significant challenge to ensure privacy from the street and the closely adjacent neighboring properties.

The former canning factory Brandão & Companhia Ltd is part of the Matosinhos Sul Urbanization Plan by architect Álvaro Siza and occupies a privileged position in the city. Near the coastline, the unit builds upon the original industrial feel, evoking the nostalgia of a time of production and connection to the sea. This emblematic building, part of the collective memory of the place, had different uses over time, being subject to several interventions that mischaracterized it.

Within a defined footprint, an unexpected figure arises. The conventional sloped roof of the suburban house is inverted—one side curved, the other straight—producing a peculiar silhouette that disrupts the monotonous suburbia. The volume resembles an exploded box sitting on a translucent plinth.

Porto Cruise Terminal is a small port complex, initiative of the Administração dos Portos do Douro e Leixões, located at the South jetty in Matosinhos, Portugal. The strategic definition of a new cruise terminal had a double objective: improvement of the commercial efficiency and a better urban integration. That’s why the project integrates new buildings, berthing work and exterior spaces of public vocation.
