Our project originated from a single-phase international architectural competition organized by the Municipality of Locarno, which won unanimously by jury vote in August 2019. This design harmonizes the educational environment with its natural and urban context, promoting values of community, sustainability, and inclusion. The new structure redefines urban relationships between the existing school and its surroundings while clarifying spatial connections with the adjacent public housing. The added volume acts as an architectural backdrop, establishing the external boundary and strengthening the identity of the entire complex.

Pardo d'Oro
Our proposal for the future Palazzo del Cinema di Locarno aims to build a physical structure that will constitute the urban identity of the Locarno Film Festival. The project aims to bring together the infrastructural needs of the Locarno Film Festival, the pre-existent physical structure of the Palazzo Scolastico and the Piazza Remo Rossi to synthesise a structure which will capture the presence of the Film Festival within the city of Locarno. The Locarno Film Festival does not have yet a recognisable home within the city, and the complex of the Palazzo Scolastico and the Piazza Remo Rossi represents a great opportunity to encrust the Film Festival within an urban structure which has already deep affective relations to the Locarno citizens, and a significant presence in today's cityscape. We hope that our project will be able to intensify both the presence of the Film Festival and the City of Locarno.

Landscape
Solduno is a neighbourhood on the outskirts of the historical centre of Locarno, southern Switzerland. I grew up a few steps from here, in an area of eclectic early 20th century bourgeois mansions and brick condos from the 1960s. Today most of those early-to mid 20th century buildings, have given way to more recent anonymous edifices. The engineer that commissioned us, was persuaded that even in this rather dull context, a distinguished project would not be out of place. We have embraced the idea, cherishing the opportunity to build a modern residential and commercial estate, in tune with the luster of a recent past, and yet merging in the fabric of the neighbourhood. City projects are for us an act of reconciliation, a mediation between past and present. The interpretation of a site, its form and atmosphere.

London and Barcelona-based practice AZPA (Alejandro Zaera-Polo Architecture) has been announced as winner of an international competition aimed to establish a permanent residence for the Locarno International Film Festival in Switzerland. Breaking away from the starchitect notion of public architecture needing to make an “extravagant gesture”, AZPA’s innovative proposal partakes in an act of “urban recycling” by reusing the pre-existent, nineteenth century structure of Piazza Castello and transforming its interior courtyard into three sizable theaters. Additionally, a complimentary renovation will take place on the surrounding Piazza Remo Rossi, which will be repaved with red natural stone that essentially provides a “permanent red carpet” qualified to host an array of festival related events.

So, on the infrastructure, lays a large public space, the Piazza Grande, an void space that allows to freely cross the city and create a new centrality.
