The neo-Gothic cathedral in Linz is one of the largest church buildings in Austria and was constructed between 1865 and 1924. In 2024, the diocese celebrated the cathedral's hundredth anniversary. However, Catholic communities face challenges: membership numbers are declining, and the church's societal relevance is decreasing. While many congregations respond with budget cuts or the sale of sacred spaces, the Archdiocese of Linz embraces innovation and openness.

The existing building – its primary substance from the 16th century – has been renovated and expanded. Over a process lasting several years, first, the premises on the ground floor were converted into the company's own architect's office. The apartments on the 1st and 2nd floor were cleared out and renovated down to their constructive structures. In the last two years, the inventory has been supplemented with an addition.

It was built as a tobacco warehouse in the 1930s according to plans by Peter Behrens and Alexander Popp. In the mid-1960s, the storage building was increased and the area in the south and in the north in front of the building was built over. After the demolition of all non-historical-listed components in 2017, there started an EU-wide architecture competition to find ideas for new use.

If one were asked to picture a Catholic Church, the first image to come to mind would probably resemble a medieval gothic cathedral with buttresses, pointed arches, and a spire pointing toward the sky. On second thought, many more styles could easily be identified as catholic architecture: the simple yet grandiose structures of the Romanesque or maybe the ornate styles of Baroque and Rococo. An image more difficult to associate with sacred architecture is that of Modernism. The Roman Catholic Church is a particularly conservative establishment. Modernism, on the other hand, is revolutionary; it is rational, functional, and technical; it rejects ornaments and embraces innovation. Surprisingly, in the years after the end of the Second World War, places of worship defied expectations. Blocks of concrete, raw materials, angular shapes, and exposed structures have all been employed to break from tradition and create churches that barely resemble a church. This article will explore Modernist mid-century Church architecture with the support of images from Jamie McGregor Smith.

The House at Taubenmarkt is situated in the heart of the provincial capital of Upper Austria, where infrastructure in every form and to every time is achievable in a few minutes. In contrast to the old town urbanity and vitality, there was the wish for quietness and intimacy within the building. The entrance area of the penthouse, which is split on three floors, can be reached above an inventory spiral staircase on fifth floor. As well as the already existing patio a new one, which is situated in the middle of this floor, brings in a lot of light and a calm atmosphere into the foyer. The bathroom is oriented to this tiny green courtyard too.

The origin of the river Kleine Rodl isn't far off and the location offers a view of hills, woods and fields. The concept for RUNDHERUM is based on a well preserved building structure. The outer walls of the solid construction remained and function as a core, the additional space was built all around that core, made out of wood and glass. The saddle roof has been removed, die garage got demolished, some openings has been expanded or closed.

The appearance of the market was not only renovated, but also clearly revitalized and harmonized with the corporate design of SPAR, the new owner. we chose the translucent casing as a simple, economical and, not least of all, “honest” way of imbuing the given cement box with a certain charm and expressiveness. The facade, composed of building-high profile glass elements, stands on a robust teel console – which also serves as impact protection – on the three visible sides of the building. the original structure remains vaguely visible behind this.

Located on the periphery of the city, the plot of land offers a spectacular view of Linz, as long as one builds high enough to be able to gaze over the neighbouring properties. That is why the ground storey lies about 6m above street level – with the pleasant side-effect of allowing the garden area to adjoin the living area on the same level to the west and north, despite the extreme slope.

The objective was the redevelopment and extension of an existing school – a building made from prefabricated concrete slabs in the 1970s – in the centre of Linz. The building's extension closed a gap of surrounding perimeter block development while at the same time creating an independent ensemble. Easy access to public transport and the location within a dynamically developing urban area justify the expansion of the school site.

The inclined plot on the outskirts of Linz lies in the middle of nature, has a panoramic view and is characterized by its topography. The design approach was therefore closely connected to the these conditions and revolved around the idea of cutting out a strip of “wild nature” and “cultivate” it.

The project’s main aim is to provide a space as large as possible for children and staff thus creating exciting situations through a combination of a clearly structured room design and the topography of the roof landscape. The kindergarten is designed as a passive house with lowest possible energy use.
