West of Lake Roxen, just outside Linköping, stands the ruin of Stjärnorp Castle, originally built between 1654 and 1662, most likely designed by Nicodemus Tessin the Elder. The estate comprised a four-storey stone main building with a stair tower facing the park to the west, and two wings facing Lake Roxen to the east. The castle is depicted in Erik Dahlbergh's Suecia Antiqua et Hodierna from 1697.

The pavilion is an extension of the living room out into the garden, and an additional recreation room for dinner and party. Built of solid brick walls, standing on a concrete slab, the house retains heat well into the fall while it cools and protects from the sun during summer. To further extend the season, both underfloor heating and a fireplace are installed. The unique geometry is a result of a basic conceptual principle: A single enclosing wall that frames the garden and the afternoon sun, while blocking out wind and sound. The building is detached from the main house to provide a visual connection between pavilion and the street. This position also enables for a sneak path between the garden and the front yard.

Designed by OOIIO Architecture, the Patchwork City Masterplan focuses on organizing the future growth of Linkoping, a city in southern Sweden with 100,000 inhabitants. The architects were challenged to experiment and explore new ways of designing cities, with all the complexities, sustainable construction systems and social cohesion aspects that a XXI st century city needs. The result is a contemporary city where the inhabitants colonize and personalize their own structure as they wish, crocheting their own city piece to generate a large patchwork all together. More images and architects’ description after the break.
