During the multiple trips we have made to Lake Ranco in recent years, we have always been intrigued by a mid-20th-century shed located at the northern entrance of the town of Futrono, which has a structural system based on pillars, struts, and beams.

The House on the Lake is located in the south of Chile, on Ranco Lake, 950 km from the metropolitan region. Situated on the shores of the lake, with hot temperatures in summer but also rain and humidity in winter with temperatures that can drop to 4°C. Conceived as a second home for a young family from Santiago, it was designed to serve as a refuge and promote relaxation both in summer and winter.

Located in Chile on the edge of Lake Ranco, a region characterized by its humid climate and its lakes, the work is located on a steep terrain with viewpoint characteristics due to its beautiful views in the near and far. The volume is considered as a compact unit referring to a large terrace. To look for the scaling with the landscape, different constructive planes are created in order to pass between one and the other to find the scale to appreciate the immensity of the landscape.

The project is proposed in the concept of a "Family Lodge", which aims to house a complete family of 4 generations, and friends. Located in the south of Chile, in the Region of Los Ríos, which is a very rainy place. From this rainy condition is born the poetic words that leads the concept of the architectural design. The first words are; "a mantle to protect from the rain", inspired by the precarious tents, which are made by the local lumberjacks, in the forest. With a nylon tensioned by threads, and sometimes with a central pillar to let the water run off the simple construction. The word “water" is the second poetic word that guides the design. The geometrical composition of the water molecule was studied. Thus the idea of three connected elements joined under a great mantle, to create the necessary protecting for the rain.

The Barn House as a recycling proposal is part of a construction material rescued by three friends that bought an old barn located in the Aculeo lagoon that was damaged since the earthquake of February 2010. The distribution of the construction material served to three different projects, a barbecue for a family in Santiago, a hotel terrace in the Colchagua Valley and the barn house at Lake Ranco, enabled for a summerhouse.

The house is located in a privileged area of ground in terms of views, orientation, etc.. so the shape of the house adapts to the existing, respecting the existence of a large rock cliff and a number of native trees. Both the shape of the house as its program does not serve the purpose of intervening the natural landscape. that is why the house is composed of two volumes connected by a bridge way around the rock and adapt to the position of the trees.
