Laoyuting Pavilion is one of the invited projects of the 2024 Dianchi Art Season: "Home and Future". It is located on the southern side of the Water-Forest Art Zone in the Laoyu River Wetland Park at Dianchi Lake. After its completion, it first served as the entrance to the Dianchi Art Festival, and after the festival, the pavilion was permanently preserved as a spatial hint for entering the wetland park, as well as a resting place for visitors. This wetland, filled with groves of bald cypress along the edge of Dianchi Lake, is in fact part of the city's water-purification infrastructure—the final stage of natural filtration before water enters the lake. It is home to many small fish, and city dwellers often come here during leisure time to catch fish, hence the name Laoyu River Wetland. As a pavilion where people rest while fishing, it naturally came to be known as the Laoyuting Pavilion.

In Yunnan, a "Jiezi" refers to the traditional street market, a place where people gather for trade and social life. On the flat hilltop of Jinfang in Anning, Kunming's largest Jiezi takes place daily, attracting both villagers and urban residents. Yet, like many such markets, it remains active only for half a day, while lying idle the rest of the time. The project aims to extend the vitality of this site beyond market hours. By proposing the concept of "Park + Market," the design allows the same ground to serve different roles over time: a bustling Jiezi during trading hours, and a public park shared by the community when the market is closed.

An Expo, a park, or a garden? The project is located in the Herbal Garden of Expo Park, far from the main pavilions, in a corner that resembles more of a civic park. Compared to the more dominant landscape designs and lingering thematic elements, this small garden, enveloped by exotic vegetation, exudes a sense of tranquility and intimacy. In its unassuming presence, it radiates a profound public vitality—the laughter and conversations of people of all ages under the pavilions have already diluted the once-ambitious narratives and grand visions that once defined this land.

Over the years, skyscrapers have evolved into multifaceted vertical communities that aim to address the complexities of urban living.

Haiyan Ke Tang is located in Haiyan Village, within the Dian Lake National Tourist Resort in Kunming. After the closure of Haiyan Primary School in 2008, a simple warehouse structure was erected on the playground, which became a public dining space for villagers to hold wedding and funeral banquets, a tradition locally referred to as "guest hall" or "guest affairs room." An invitation from the Dianchi Art Season 2024 prompted the renovation and upgrade of Ke Tang. For Haiyan Village, on the one hand, its unique geographical location and the breathtaking, ever-changing sunsets and twilight skies have made it extremely popular post-pandemic—a longing for equality and public access to waterfront spaces, triggered by the sublime celestial landscapes, seems to reflect the beautiful life by the side of Dian Lake as recorded by Du Tianrong in the 1960s.

Within the site is a one-room attic-style building with multilevel eaves and hipped roofs, which has been verified on site to be the Wen Xing Lou built in the Qing Dynasty, a local cultural preservation building. Although the original building has lost its function and is very shabby in appearance, its proper scale and form make it very harmonious with the surrounding environment, and there are often residents gathering spontaneously for some cultural worship activities.

Dahei New Village is located in Xiyang Township, Jinning County, Kunming City, Yunnan Province in China. Most local villagers are Yi minority. The vernacular buildings there are mainly built by earth and some are in disrepair recently. One University One Village (1U1V) team has carried out a series of rammed earth building renovation projects and developed a set of innovative rammed earth building strategies which are well recognized to suit the local needs. Gongfang (community hall) is a multi-purpose activity hall that the villagers use to hold events such as weddings, funerals, and festivals. However, the former community hall was too old to use and has safety risks. 1U1V team obtained an agreement with the township government to rebuild it by using innovative anti-seismic rammed earth construction technology in order to provide a more safe, comfortable, functional, and artistic space for the villagers.

Twenty-two years later, the 15th Conference of Parties to the United Nations Convention on Biodiversity (COP15) is being held in Kunming. On this occasion, Contemporary Gallery Kunming selected a vacant venue within the original World Horticultural Expo Garden for an artistic revitalization project, to construct a small art museum dedicated to the art of Zeng Xiaolian, a long-time scientific illustrator for the Kunming Institute of Botany, Chinese Academy of Sciences.
