In Kraków's Kazimierz district, we designed a restaurant that transports guests into the atmosphere of Sweden. Its name, Dala, refers to the traditional wooden horse, dalahäst, which for centuries has been given during celebrations as a symbol of happiness and festivity. Just like the horse, the restaurant is meant to live by the rhythm of celebration, from everyday fika, through the summer festival of Midsommar, to evening gatherings in the spirit of mingel. The project was created for the founders of Kaffe Bageri Stockholm, who decided to move beyond the café formula and create a place where Swedish traditions could be experienced in a fuller and more atmospheric way.

Instead of the anticipated courtyard development, we proposed demolishing the old too-small hall and the additions that have accrued over the years. Building a new hall in their place, preserves and unambiguously closes the courtyard, between the school, the playing fields, and the street.

Recent years have prompted a rediscovery and a re-framing of some of the more controversial architectural phenomenons of the past century, with Brutalist architecture coagulating significant interest through its sheer scale, powerful expression and purist forms. Brutalist architecture across the former Eastern Bloc is inextricably associated with the totalitarian regimes that marked the history of this part of Europe during the last half of the 20th century. Following in line with the architecture of the Eastern Bloc, Poland’s urban landscape is dotted with large-scale prefab housing estates and stark brutalist public buildings constructed during the country’s Communist rule.

To strip a city of its architecture is to erase its history altogether. Despite a widespread public distaste for Brutalism, the brutalist era in architecture often went hand in hand with political movements promising an egalitarian vision in post-Stalinist Poland. What may now be considered austere and overbearing was originally intended to be anything but; the buildings today carry both an appreciation for their legacy and the burden of unwanted memories.

A manor is an extremely important phenomenon for the Polish identity. For hundreds of years manors have been a characteristic element of the Polish landscape, a depositary of the Polish history and culture, centres of the gentry ethos and customs as well as national traditions and the struggle for the Polish identity. Almost since the very beginning of the state they had been built first as defensive knights dwellings, and later, since the middle of the seventeenth century, as modest – in comparison with palaces - residences of landowners. As compared to other European countries, there were relatively many small landed gentry mansions in Poland. One major threat to our culture and identity in Europe that started after 1939 is the process of removing historical manor houses and parks from the Polish landscape, what implies blurring of patriotic gentry values in the collective consciousness of the society. Polish manors demonstrate a great variety of architectural concepts implemented in different historical periods.

The requirements of the precious site encouraged us to treat the planned hall as part of the existing landscape with all its distinctive features. The view from Focha Avenue – across the hall and towards Salwator Hill and the Church of the Holy Saviour – suggested to us the form of the northern facade of the building. The panoramic views of the nearby hill with Kościuszko Mound are visible from the building’s interior through the west elevation. The entrance lobby, lifted a meter higher than the pavement level of the adjacent Focha Avenue, looks out towards the Błonia meadow, above the passing car traffic. The hall forms part of this landscape, emerging right out the layered terrain. It connects the levels of the pavement along Focha Avenue and the path atop the Rudawa river dike with the ground floor and the rooftop terrace. It is on those multiple surfaces – horizontal and inclined, external and internal – where we realized the given functional brief.

OVO Grąbczewscy Architekci's stacked garden-like proposal has been awarded third place in a competition for the new Małopolska Science Center in Krakow, Poland. The competition brief asked for the design of an innovative cultural institution with an iconic architectural form that would represent creativity, openness and independent thinking. As a reflection of both the city and the region, the center is also intended to provide a model for sustainable construction, energy efficiency, and education that inspires immersive visitor engagement.

FAAB Architektura has designed a smog-fighting music academy on the site of a former military base in Cracow, Poland. In a city constantly tackling air pollution, FAAB has incorporated a 1300 square meter "Air Purifier" into their proposal, combating CO2 levels as effectively as 33,000 city trees. This system, however, is only one element in a music academy wholly integrated with its natural surroundings.

The highest value of the plot is a wonderful view stretching out. The idea was for the house to become its framework that crops it. The most appropriate building turned out to be a fully open on mountain landscape one-storey building, which gives the same view to all of the interiors.
