Conceived as a sculpted mass within the North Sea dunes of Oostduinkerke, Villa Nouvelle Vague emerges from an investigation into organic geometries that liberate architecture from conventional construction constraints. The curved concrete volume references both protective seashells and the modernist boat-shaped Normandie restaurant, establishing a dialogue between natural forms and modernist heritage.

OYO Architects is an architecture studio led by Ferran Massip, Nigel Jooren, Eddy Soete, Veroniek Vanhaecke and LiesWillaert, based in Ghent and Barcelona. They present Dune House, a 120 m2 sustainable retreat located in the uniqueOostduinkerke dune landscape in Belgium. The original house, partially destroyed during World War II, gains a new architectural narrative by transforming the buried half that survived along with the later wooden additions into a refuge that blends perfectly in the environment honestly and subtly.

Piet Goddaer, also known as Ozark Henry, lives and works in the coastal region, where he experienced the most beautiful times of his youth. When he was looking for a suitable industrial building to house his new studio - ‘I need space and height’ - a for-sale farmstead caught his attention. The house with adjacent stable and shop initially charmed him because of their location by the old canal. He realized that this would be his new creative nest at the first sight of the enormous garage for agricultural vehicles at the back. A complete surprise, as that building was largely hidden from the street view.

Abdel and Marijke have just retired. They lived in a large house, built in the 1980s. Their three children had just left the house, and their house had grown too large and defects in the house were gradually emerging. Instead of patching up their home, they made a more radical but conscious choice: they decided to sell their home and look for a home tailored to their new lifestyle: compact, completely renewed and with a manageable garden.

The design of these two multi-storey properties respects the scale of the adjacent residential centre. Both buildings are able to optimally integrate in the landscape as a result of their underground garage and the planting of dune grasses. The buildings each consist of two floors plus an attic floor. Each floor houses a three-bedroom apartment or duplex. A uniform design was adopted for the façade and the roof to achieve a striking and distinctive architectural style. The preferred choice was white aluminium, as a contemporary application and interpretation of the white coastal architecture. The shell was constructed using a white aluminium standing seam system, which is ideal for use on the wall as well as the roof. Due to its scale, purity and simplicity in terms of volume, façade composition, details and use of materials, the buildings blend effortlessly into their surroundings. The open space is planted with dune grasses, through which a path meanders to the entrance and terraces of the ground floor apartments.
