The relationship between our client and us spans more than two decades. Over the years, we were invited to shape three spaces across his life. In 2015, he acquired a fourth property and once again called on us to take measurements. Then, mid-process, he paused. He wanted time to clarify his vision for the space before moving forward. In the years that followed, he would occasionally browse bookshops, pulling out architecture and design magazines whenever he spotted the name "Waterfrom" — leafing through the pages, catching up on our latest work, then quietly returning the issue to the shelf. He was waiting. Perhaps for his own ideas to crystallize; perhaps for us to grow into the partner he needed. We knew nothing of this silent vigil. We simply kept moving forward, one project at a time. Then, in 2023, the phone rang. "Let's begin."

In line with the client's goal to regenerate the site, an elevated walkway was implemented to maintain minimal visual and physical footprint while enabling modern exploration. This walkway, with its varied design, adapts to different needs along the city wall and integrates design elements into a single linear structure.

This house was originally built in the 1960s and once served as an auxiliary dormitory for the Japanese Navy's Sixth Fuel Factory during the period of Japanese rule. After renovation, it was transformed into a hybrid space for both living and working. Architect Lin combined his experiences exploring Eastern gardens with childhood memories of life in the community, weaving together elements of nature, historical memory, and religious imagination within the space. He sought to blur the boundaries between these scenes, allowing modern life to reorganize their relationships. In doing so, this historic house avoids being forcibly restored to its past form, disconnected from contemporary life, or facing demolition.

In most situations, architects navigate a complex web of construction codes, airspace regulations, and numerous other rules that dictate the form and execution of a project. However, cultural architecture often presents a unique opportunity for more daring and expressive designs. These projects frequently garner support from local governments, unlocking possibilities for formal explorations that might otherwise remain unrealized. In this regard, cultural architecture serves a dual purpose: enriching the community and establishing iconic landmarks that define the identity of their city or region. This ambition has certainly manifested in Taiwan. Situated in the heart of East Asia, this island nation boasts a remarkable array of formal explorations by both international and Taiwanese architects.

The house in this case is a 40-year-old terrace house with a narrow and long pattern, and the internal is cut into many small pieces of space by many old mezzanines which are all the original structure of this house. Therefore, the whole space was dark and lacking of lighting even in the morning. We hope that the old mezzanines in the building can be preserved, and trying to make the disadvantages of the original space be turned into highlights which are presented in a more interesting way through design. The first step is to import light into the room. We remove the useless stairs and built a patio in the central of the building so that the ample light can spread on each interlaced mezzanine evenly. The angle of sunshine which reflects in different corners at different moment also affects our feeling of the space.

Life in the city is something that everyone tries to escape. It is full of cars, noises and things that assault our senses. By stepping out of our comfort zone, we gain the ability to try a new lifestyle. The property is adjacent to the low-density residential area of the Agongdian Reservoir in mountains of Kaohsiung. A green slope was created under the suspended wall on the second floor of the main building facing the southward hilly land. The natural grassy slope in the courtyard echoes the greenness of the hillside slope and extends the public space for the family.

The owners of this home is a married couple who are roughly 60 years old. They attach great importance to practicality and would like to use more stone materials to build a bold home environment. However, "material" is not only about space, but also contains a kind of time flow. When planning retirement houses, the experience of homeowners becomes the basis of our storytelling using materials. We embed luxurious material into the owners’ daily life. By comparing the changes of various materials, we feel the sense of layering stacked in different materials without losing its function. From a distance, it looks plain. From up close, it looks delicate. Through experimentation, we mix early local and modern exquisite styles.
