There are projects that begin long before the design. In Itaipava, in the Fluminense mountains, an old stable from the São João de Icaraí Farm stood as the last vestige of a rural past: an isolated, silent volume, surrounded by vegetation. When we were invited to intervene in the property, the central question was not just to renovate a building that is almost 80 years old, but to understand how to transform this agricultural space into a contemporary country house, without erasing the geography and identity of the place.

When watching the spring bubbling up and running into the Itaipava site, we had the idea of damming it and creating a natural pool with running water, but with a cement bottom, good for swimming. When built, it resembled a lake. Above it, there is a glass annex where you can enjoy the landscape. With chilling lounge, steam room, gym, bike repair room and a jacuzzi. The celling is very high and the roof overhang resembles an old-fashioned small town railway station: there are no pillars supporting the overhang, only those walls mounted brackets.

GN Chapel follows an important tradition on Brazilian architecture that is the construction of religious buildings on private residences. During the colonial period (especially sec XVIII and XIX), over the influence of Portuguese architecture, most of the farms had its own private chapel. The farms and surrounding cities were part of an important economic system based on the culture of coffee, one of the pillars of the Brazilian economy by that period. The existence of such peculiar architectural buildings was such a landmark that they boosted an artistic style that was once very remarkable and important for Brazil. To this artistic style was given the name of Barroque its most well known being the one developed in Minas Gerais.

The circumstances inherent to the design of 'Casa do Monte' refer to one of the most primordial themes of architecture – the relation between work and landscape. In this sense, because it is located on the top of a mountain, such a relationship can be explored in order to perceive the uncertain boundaries between the horizontality of the landscape and the figure of the architectural work. As of this premise, the structure that shapes the spatiality of housing arises from the positioning of five parallel planes, whose interval between them determines the functional and structural character of the project.

Despite being in a proportionately large lot, the building has its shape defined by the small triangle of its buildable area on the entrance of the lot, resulting from enforcement of the condominium and local legislation. The whole building area is embedded in this triangle, with the exception of the deck, which was designed as permeable construction, as allowed. Those restrictions forced the house to be very exposed to the street and that was taken as a design proposition.
