i29 designs a home for a family of three generations - On the plot of an existing main residence, i29 architects designed a second, single-story home for senior residents. The 100 m² house is a carefully considered addition that respects the scale and context of the existing site. Its placement creates a natural relationship between the main and secondary dwellings, closely connected while respecting each other's privacy. Since its completion, the grandparents have enjoyed being close to their children and grandchildren, and vice versa. Architecture and interior design are uniquely integrated into one cohesive living volume.

The process of redeveloping and converting Hoofddorp Fort took a decade. Some 8,100 m2 in size, the Dutch world heritage site has been transformed into an urban park with space for a restaurant as well as cultural and educational activities. Serge Schoemaker Architects tackled the landscape, architecture and interior in an integral manner, fusing past and present into a new entity. Hoofddorp Fort (1904) is one of the few forts along the historical Defence Line of Amsterdam with two floors. Like most of the forts, this defense structure is embedded into the landscape and covered with a layer of earth. The fort consists of a rich labyrinth of spaces: gun positions, rooms, corridors, and niches.

Next to the Hoofddorp train station is the Beukenhorst West business park. The site is located between the station and the village center. Until recently it was a mono-functional, pragmatic business area: office blocks and parking spaces. The area will change significantly with the realisation of Hyde Park: MVRDV designed the masterplan for nearly 4,000 apartments, Dijk&co Landschapsarchitectuur made a design for the public space. The residential blocks are currently being built after designs by MVRDV, MVSA, Studio Ninedots, Barcode, and Team V. The area will become the new entrance to Hoofddorp.

Clean Lines and Round Corners. The state-of-the-art office building is located on the Taurusavenue, near the historical monument of the Amsterdam Defense Line, listed as Unesco World Heritage since 1996. The exterior aspect of the building, with its clean lines and transparent character, was designed to match this special context. A grid of light-colored Terrazzo cladding frames the large openings. The transition from the building to the natural surrounding is mediated by the rounded corners of the building volume, that soften the geometric grid of the facade. To realize these perfectly rounded corners in the building, Powerhouse Company collaborated with Saint Gobain to develop the spectacular-size round glass that contributes to the unique character of the project.

From the outside, the building is characterized by an elegant geometric clarity. The full-perimeter overhangs, whose main function is sheltering the workspace from direct sunlight, create the distinctive horizontality of the facade. The entrance of the building, consisting of an oversized, ASICS-branded custom-manufactured blue glass wall, is highlighted by a deep recess in the main facade. The presence of double-height transparency on one side and a recess with a green terrace on the other breaks the symmetrical composition of the simple horizontal overhangs and central position of the entrance.

The aim was to create a space where everything revolves around collaboration, interaction and sharing knowledge.
We space. That’s our name for this communal area at the heart of the building. It’s a place that brings people together. Out of the concrete floors we carved a 14-metre-tall void that houses a giant staircase that cuts diagonal lines through the void as it makes its way upwards, linking the different floors to one another. Now people are on the move, making their way back and forth on the timber steps. Some of them linger for a chat, and there’s space on the broad treads to sit for a moment. The sound of chatter and the aroma of coffee from the café below now fill the hall. Most of the office space has already been leased, bringing the building back to life once again.
