The Hainan Science Museum, designed by Ma Yansong and his firm MAD, has opened to the public on the edge of Wuyuan River National Wetland Park. Since its trial opening, it has welcomed more than 350,000 visitors in four months, with peak days drawing more than 5,800 people. "I wanted the project to be built on the idea of flow and chaos — space, function, and knowledge to flow into one another, freely." says Ma Yansong, Founder and Principal Partner of MAD. "Different subjects should connect, overlap, and stay open. If artificial intelligence can already answer almost any question, a science museum's job is no longer to deliver facts. It is to teach children how to ask them."

The project is located in Haikou, Hainan Province, where the sea and tropical vegetation define the city's natural context. Approximately sixty kilometers to the northwest lies Fushan Town, the origin of coffee cultivation in Hainan. Established in the 1970s, Fushan Coffee has been embedded in regional daily life for decades, carrying both an agricultural lineage and a vernacular cultural presence. Commissioned by Fushan Coffee, the project reimagines the new coffee space as a medium for the brand's story—one that allows visitors to experience its history, production, and locality. This position informs both material strategy and spatial organization.

Haikou is an island in China, it's situated on the north coast of Hainan Island, and the South China Sea is around the island. We wanted to create something related to the ocean because Haikou is surrounded by the ocean, but we wanted to create something unique and we didn't want to use the color blue like the ocean, so we decided to use the brick material for the theme of our design. Because bricks are made of sand which lay on the beach. Looking at this, you can perfectly build a story in your mind. This is timeless, just as bricks can be used to create beautiful and durable spaces that can't be worn down and improved as they blow out their birthday cake.

In 2021, Haikou City initiated a series of cultural projects titled "Pavilions by the Sea," aimed at providing citizens with interdisciplinary and intellectually engaging public entertainment spaces. As one of the 16 coastal pavilions, "Mountain of the Sky" has become the second new urban landmark built at the northern end of Haikou Bay. Facing the southwest coast, the Sou Fujimoto Architects crafted an undulating, continuous ring-shaped roof with an irregular, curved surface shell structure made of thin concrete. Invited by Aranya and the operators, Juanzhong Bookstore and Yishan Children's Bookstore, we designed a space for reading and relaxation for the citizens of Haikou under this expansive roof.

The design initiated from thinking about how to create a nurturing environment that celebrates creativity and interaction rather than examination-oriented learning cultures.

In design, we often need to take care of two opposite principles at the same time, release while controlling, lift when putting down, retreat when advancing, and break while continuing. At a time when the characteristic of most of the start-up areas tends to be unified, how to create the architectural form of ‘not stacking symbols and not monotonously repeating’ through the combination of traditional culture and modern aesthetics will be a widely discussed proposition. We hope to find a way to really make the design bigger while smaller, lighter while heavier, deeper while lighter, and more modern while traditional, because all elements can finally find a way to coexist, and all exploration is essentially a lovely fantasy for the next wave.
