Before even looking at the project itself, most people ask me: “But how did you end up doing a project in India?” The truth is so unbelievable that I sometimes hesitate to tell it, not because I wish to embellish the story but to make it more believable. So here is the real story. In December 2015, the agency was going through a critical period. One day, the phone rang in the middle of a lunch break.

Renesa Architecture Design Interiors Studio took cues from the original deconstructive architecture to create a spatial experience filled with volumetric galleries and partitioned masses. Located at the newly renovated 32nd avenue, the space plays host to a restaurant and an escape room unlocking a variable experience that includes the visitor from the very start.

The architecture of the house explores a play of volumes, materials and stark play of light & shadow. The volume blocking is strong & rigid with a further accentuation through contrasting materials – the stunning corten steel with stark whites. Corten steel is used prominently on the façade with seamless joining techniques following a strict geometry. The monotony of white blocks is broken with sharp block patterns created through aluminum grooves.

The design of the space is conceived as a system of layers or layering of systems. The first is the insertion of an infrastructure piece that acts as a flexible frame. This frame behaves as an organizing grid for the required activities / functions that need to be incorporated within the space. The frame primarily carries electrical conduits that lends to the dimension of the custom fabricated channels. The channels work as a modular system, and their built-up sections allow for intersections in the x/y/z axes. Further the flexibility of the system is tested through the way other objects attach themselves to the frame. Sometimes resting or slipping past or getting fastened, following and sometimes breaking the grid.

Sector 66 of Gurgaon, India will be the site of Maison Edouard François’ newest project: a massive luxury complex crowned by three stainless steel-clad skyscrapers. Given over entirely to opulence, Guragon 66 will house a hotel, a multiplex cinema, and an apartment complex. Yet its most defining feature may be its shopping mall, which covers most of the ground floor. This glass-canopied commercial center will host internationally known brands, such as Fendi and Chanel, in independent marble buildings within the main structure.
