The client's childhood home, a traditional Japanese house, has an engawa - a gallery open to the garden. There, she was immersed in the scent of fresh grass, the fragrances of the seasons, and even the smells drifting from his neighbors' kitchens. The wish was to recreate that memory, this time in an apartment fifteen meters above the ground. We therefore imagined a house open to the sky.

Through these elements, we aimed to create a place where visitors and residents feel at ease, liberated, comfortable, and supported, with a sense of discovery.

Privacy and Curtains - Located just a three-minute walk from a subway station in a commercial area dense with mid-to-high-rise buildings, this residential complex is built. Standardized apartment layouts in the real estate market are repeatedly used regardless of the surrounding environment. As a result, in places where it is difficult to secure privacy, curtains remain closed day and night. The continuity between the interior spaces and the balconies is compromised, undermining the spatial role of the balconies.

The planned location is a distinct one in the Tenjin area of Fukuoka city, situated within the precincts of the Kego Shrine. While one side of the cafe faces a busy street with heavy traffic, the opposite side opens onto the approach to the shrine, surrounded by moderate greenery and a tranquil atmosphere contrasting with the busy environment of the city. Given this contrasting setting, we naturally envisioned the cafe as a nexus connecting the opposing elements of "city" and "shrine."

A wooden building that harmonizes with Ohori Park’s abundant nature so you can enjoy its view. In our minds, realizing this vision would require a clean structure. Conventional Japanese architecture uses many materials, so there is a tendency for all that visual information to dominate the field of view. However, by fusing cutting-edge lumber technology with traditional Japanese woodworking, we were able to create a simple structure using no metal at all. Building upon existing values to manifest new ones, as it should be. A space where you can take in the scenery of Ohori Park in its natural light enveloped in the fragrance of fresh wood.

By using movable bookcases as partitions of the bedrooms, I designed a house where the space expands and contracts as the form of the family changes. In postwar Japan, Most of the flat units were designed for nuclear families of a parent and children, with the living room, dining room, parents' room, kid room, kitchen, and bathroom squeezed into a small rectangle of around 80 square meters. What you see here is a one-to-one correspondence between the family form and the floor plan.

The client’s wish was to have attractive tenant access to this location. After repeated discussions, we settled on a low-rise building of high quality, rather than a towering high-rise.
